E3 2005: Revolution Revealed?

Wii News | We have the image of the console and the first details.
The Revolution will be officially unveiled in just under seven hours, but we think we've got the first image of the console, along with the first details.

The Revolution will have a front loading drive that will accept DVD's and Gamecube games. It will also be able to play DVD's like the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Nintendo are also said to be catching up with the online revolution (pardon the pun), Revolution will offer broadband access to a free Internet-based player matching service, similar to Xbox Live, that also will have downloadable versions of nearly every Nintendo game — from arcade classic Donkey Kong through current titles such as Mario Sunshine

PALGN will have more on the Revolution as we find out more. Stay tuned.

yes, we work fast here, we found the image too, but got some info as well. icon_smile.gif

It's pretty weird, I've tried to get more info, but thesr's just this single pic on the IGN gamecube page, without even a story to go with it, and not even on the front page! Sureley if true, this is news?

And there's a vague article about it being 3 times more powerful then gamecube, but a french site says '3 times better looking graphics, not power"

It's all very weird. I'm not trusting anything yet.

LOL! No worth making assumptions! Only what 8 hours left? icon_lol_old.gif

USA Today broke the story, not IGNcube. So this is just as official as hearing it from Nintendo themselves, as USA Today were also the first to reveal the DS.

I like the design though.

Trouble is with the major news sites is that they probably do know more, but they can't reveal it, becuase that would screw up their relations. With Nintendo partnering with IGN, for the DS, do you think they haven't seen the revolution yet? It's kinda a weird situation with the major news sites and the major publishers. With all these NDAs these days they're stuck posting only what the publishers say they can. I dont' know if I like it [/rant]

BTW: check out http://www.nintendo.com they've finally got a pre E3 site up.

Just thinking of it now! This sucks the one day that they are going to reveal something good. I have to wake up at 5:30am tomorrow to go to rugby training! icon_sad.gif

I like!

Hope this is it - that's a cool look for a console, if it's the real deal.
Here's hoping it packs a punch in the department of raw power & graphics!

Well it looks like this is it. IGN article describes pretty much what we're seeing. Glad to finally see the thing, but I'm concerned about the power of the machine against its competitors.

New details regarding Nintendo's next-generation console, codenamed Revolution, have started to sprinkle onto the Internet. The machine, which will be revealed during Nintendo's pre-E3 2005 show on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, will sport a slick, black design and a front blue light.

Revolution will be "two-to-three times more powerful than GameCube," according to Nintendo, which also acknowledges that the next-generation race isn't solely about new technologies. By contrast, Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is 13-15 times more powerful than the first, according to the publisher. And Sony says it's PlayStation 3 is roughly 35 times more powerful than PlayStation 2.
Nintendo also revealed that using Revolution's new Wi-Fi connection, gamers would be able to go online to a free gamer-matching service. Interestingly, in a move similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service, Revolution users will be able to download classic and new Nintendo games over the Internet. Nintendo cited such examples as Donkey Kong and Super Mario Sunshine, which suggests that Revolutionaries could have access to games for all the publisher's previous consoles.

Well, I'm just hoping Nintendo are using their '15 million polys per second as opposed to 100+ raw' regime when they say it's 2 to 3 times more powerful then the GCN.

Yes, me too...

As for the look of the console... small and functional. It's good. icon_smile.gif
I'd like to see larger pictures and some different angles though. The pre-E3 press conference will hopefully give us some of those.

Downloading older games? Woot icon_biggrin.gif
Though... the thought of downloading Super Mario Sunshine scares me. Where's it going to put games of that size, how many of them will it be able to hold, will you have to pay for them, will you be able to delete them and if you do will you have to pay for downloading them a second time, and lastly how long is it going to take to download a game of that size? icon_lol.gif

Don't tell me they've managed to squeeze in a hard drive on that thing. <_<

I've noticed something else. They said their media bay would be self loading (so as to allow 8cm GCN dvds to be read), but this drive looks more like a slot-drive (that or the smallest self-loading media bay ever). Plus, the vertical orientation irks me a bit. I hope that thing it's sitting on is a stand.

All in all, that looks like a very neat, clean no-fuss machine. I'm still worries about the power. Something that tiny..

It's nice and all, I just wish it was a bit more curved - not to the 360's extent, but just a little more. Where's the handle to go along with it?? How are we going to be able to carry it from one room to the next? icon_razz.gif

Two to three times more powerful icon_confused.gif

Hmmm...
icon_confused.gif

That 2-3 times more powerful info puts me off a bit...

After seeing what the PS3 can do (and might I say that if there is ANY second console that I ever get in this round, it's going to be the PS3), if the Revolution is only as powerful as this info says, then...
It'll be in a class of its own (a lower class)...

No, don't worry yet - we'll know more by the morning!

By "self-loading", maybe they mean that the Revolution loads the disc itself, i.e. there's no tray and it's a slot drive? icon_confused.gif
It is possible for slot-drives to read different sizes of disc in the same drive...
I'm not familiar with disc drive terminology, excuse me if I'm a little confused icon_lol.gif

Yeah, according to the official Nintendo press release of a little while ago, it works both vertically and horizontally. I assume that the thing at the bottom is a detachable stand, or it looks like it wouldn't lie flat horizontally.

Wow its looks...neat. Cant wait to see it in video form tonight

Possibly external power supply like the Mac Mini, that would make the thing bloody quiet too!

That is a plus, but the minus, you have a bloody extra piece of junk attached to your power cord icon_lol_old.gif! I would prefer for the PSU to be built into the unit since the noise wouldn't bother me since I turn up the volume on my TV hence I wouldn't be able to hear the fan! icon_wink.gif

hmm I was hearing rumours about 4 x 2.5ghz core CPU and dual core next-gen radeon GPU.. in which case it would be considerably more powerful than xbox360 or PS3.. but I don't know if this has any basis in fact..
The leaked specs, if true, where more powerful then 360, but prob less then PS3. Other evidence did suggest they were true, but the size of the unit may make 4 cores unlikley....

Thank God beauty is only skin deep...

Sleek and I like it. Powerwise, I hope Nintendo are being conservative...
