Rumour: Wii successor set for E3 2011?

Wii Rumour | Future waggle inbound.

Nintendo only just recently launched new hardware. The Nintendo 3DS, successor to the Nintendo DS, is the next step in the company's ever growing and oh-so-popular line of portable gaming hardware. Most people would assume that the 3DS would be the company's current focus. However, if rumours are to be believed, the company could be on the verge of showing off something else; the successor to the Wii, and the next major home console.

The rumour comes from multiple sources, including Game Informer, Kotaku, IGN and a tweet from Kotaku journalist Jim Reilly.

According to this rumour, Nintendo plans to show off their next home console at E3 2011, or may even announce the system prior to the event just as they did with the Nintendo 3DS, and are targeting a launch in late 2012. In terms of hardware, reports are conflicting. While the system is all but confirmed to output at at least 720p, and quite probably 1080p, the raw hardware has been reported to both fall shy of the Xbox 360, and in some cases surpass the PlayStation 3. Typically of rumours, gossip from both ends of the spectrum makes it impossible to accurately pinpoint what is and isn't true.

Could this rumour be true? We'll find out at E3 2011.

I always consider the handheld side of things completely different kettle of fish. The gameboy has always been less powerful then it's competition. (Lynx, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket etc) So the DS/3DS being less powerfull then the PSP/NGP is par for the course.

The Wii is the first time they've brought out a home console less powerful then the competition.

As the current Nintendo strategy seems to be sell hardware at a price point were they make a profit I doubt it will be a great deal more powerful than then the 360/PS3 and I doubt we will see 1080P native.

What we can count on from Nintendo is excellent first party software and that's all I really want from them.

EDIT: Let's assume they did announce this successor, what would peoples reactions be if they pulled a Twilight Princess and delayed Skyward Sword so it could launch along side the new machine.

For what it's worth, it'd be pretty difficult for Nintendo not to surpass or at least match the power of the 360/PS3 - they'd have to be using hardware outdated by almost a decade otherwise. Smartphones these days can just about take on the Wii.

1080p isn't that hard to do with current graphics cards. Nintendo's strategy has always been to be above cut-price at least since the 64 and I don't see that changing so expect a powerful console a bit above the current gen but sony being a hardware developer first will try to push the specs a lot higher than nintendo's interest(I don't think they will push as high as they did with the PS3). Microsoft will again aim for the middle ground and will come with the next version of kinect bundled.

Nintendo has always tried to win by selling your childhood back and that doesn't really work with cutting-edge graphics. I'm not sure if the mainstream even know the difference with HD so I really doubt it will be a wiiHD with little improvement. I think a wii 2 or a new console name will be more likely than wii HD.

It wasn't always like that, though. Until a few years into the PS2 era, most people saw a console and said "is that a Nintendo?". And until the DS/PSP era, most people called every handheld a Gameboy. Admittedly, the Gameboy was pretty much the only thing you could get, but still.

And I'm not sure about the new successor thing as of yet. It's been enough time, but game sites get a little overexcited about rumours sometimes. I think it's possible, but there's a few first party Wii games on the horizon yet, even if less big third party titles are coming out.

I'd be more than happy, atleast they would have a solid title at launch and it would definately help sell the console on day one.

I hope they do this and make it in HD. If any Nintendo game deserves/needs to be in HD, its definately Zelda.

Hopefully the 3DS is a sign Nintendo has adopted a proper shader pipeline this time, rather than forcing developers to program through the TEV to get all those flashy effects. It would go a long way in making sure games look as good as possible.

I wouldn't want SS to be delayed another year for it to be released on the new console. It wouldn't be a Wii2 Zelda... it would just be the Wii Zelda, and then we'll complain that the Wii2 doesn't have it's own Zelda made from the ground up, same situation as Twilight Princess, but with the leap in power, it would be worse.

Would you rather see SS in HD or would you rather have a Zelda with PS3+ power and HD? It would be great, but patience.

I want Nintendo to launch with a new I.P, something outstanding and different. It was disappointing seeing Nintendo boast the Mario, Metroid, Zelda trio combo twice this gen, especially with Mario (but it's Mario haha). Sure, there was other titles (some new), but they focused our eyes on their "Big 3", they didn't care much for their lesser, more interesting titles and just threw them out on the market to die. I want them to refocus.

I used to be a Nintendo fanboy but they've lost me completely in the past few years... I hope they can reign me back in... some day. But for that to happen, hey, let's modernise. Get some voice actin in there. Get some proper online support. Give the hardcore a controller with a boatload of buttons and pretty graphics (yes the wii has the classic controller, but it is sorely underused. Goldeneye with the CCP was fantastic).

And then make the best Zelda the world has ever seen (and not something soulless, pixelated and blurry like Twilight Princess).

Yeah, it is each to their own I guess, but I have a Wii and PS Move and while I think both are okay, I wouldn't want them as my normal control scheme. I'm not saying the next Nintendo console should be solely a classic controller affair, I wholly expect motion to be a huge focus again, but they should have perhaps two libraries of games: regular & motion controlled, or let the player choose in FPS games and so on.

Right now, the Wii has very little utilisation of classic controls, it's all waggling and pointing. They should get a better balance in there, and then they'd have something not just for the waggle-happy but also the more traditional gamers who currently prefer the competition.

Choice would be fine I think, and the best way to go to appeal to both kinds of players. I, personally, would be pissed if a shooter came out that I wanted to play and I didn't have the option to use the pointer. I prefer it that much over dual analogue. But there's no reason the choice shouldn't be there, and games like GoldenEye are great in having solid controls for both ends of the spectrum.

Waggle will be in for sure. No freakin' clue what teh deal is with a touch pad on the controller, if that is genuine.

I don't really believe anything I've heard, I'm not even sure there is a Wii 2, it's all rumours and the sources are sketchy.

If it sounds too good to be true...

I shall wait until E3 to see what's what. And now I think I'm going to move to other thread because it seems you and I are the only ones still in this one

OK Nintendo can do this cheaply and be more attractive to developers. One of the big changes they will have to bite is to go multicore, but at least it wont be expensive.

You can get a 2.6Ghz Quad core PPC pretty cheaply (G5 level cores are ample) but you dont need a better CPU than the Cell chip. Now RAM is dirt cheap you can shove alot of that in as (now this is important) one of the biggest headaches for game developers is the lack of RAM in the HD consoles, getting around the RAM limitations is tough (its one of the reasons why the PS3's true power will never be unlocked).

Now if you give a developer more RAM to play with, their jobs become easier, they become happier and you can develop HD games cheaper.

The only hurdle is a GPU but if they are just interested in more than PS3 and not a generation ahead level grunt (like on the Radeon HD6990)... well its been 5 years, thats not hard. We've had Crysis capable cards for years now.

Oh, and I hope people expect this to seem 'expensive'. No matter how good or bad the hardware is Nintendo will price at a point that earns them profit, not loss.
