Rumour: Wii successor set for E3 2011?

Wii Rumour | Future waggle inbound.
Nintendo only just recently launched new hardware. The Nintendo 3DS, successor to the Nintendo DS, is the next step in the company's ever growing and oh-so-popular line of portable gaming hardware. Most people would assume that the 3DS would be the company's current focus. However, if rumours are to be believed, the company could be on the verge of showing off something else; the successor to the Wii, and the next major home console.

The rumour comes from multiple sources, including Game Informer, Kotaku, IGN and a tweet from Kotaku journalist Jim Reilly.

According to this rumour, Nintendo plans to show off their next home console at E3 2011, or may even announce the system prior to the event just as they did with the Nintendo 3DS, and are targeting a launch in late 2012. In terms of hardware, reports are conflicting. While the system is all but confirmed to output at at least 720p, and quite probably 1080p, the raw hardware has been reported to both fall shy of the Xbox 360, and in some cases surpass the PlayStation 3. Typically of rumours, gossip from both ends of the spectrum makes it impossible to accurately pinpoint what is and isn't true.

Could this rumour be true? We'll find out at E3 2011.

He's saying there are contradicting reports.

Honestly I kind of don't give a shit at this point. Nintendo are going to have to do a lot to convince me it's worth spending money on.

If this is genuinely on par or above the current gens, and comes packed with a proper controller, then it's about the best news of the year. Nintendo lost the plot selling Wii Fit to soccer moms - and they have (I think) come to a realisation (since the Wii decline) that core gamers are crucial to their future success. Wii moms and casuals are happy with their one game - we're not.

Step it up Nintendo, and all will be forgiven...

If this is true, will we be seeing an even further decline in the output of Wii titles as they will be focussing on making games for their new system? The Wii probably has the smallest amount of quality titles of any Nintendo system I've owned and all in all, was a massive disappointment.

I don't care how good the hardware is, without a strong library of games to support it, this system is useless. Much like the 3DS, I'll be waiting for decent games to be released before forking out cash (and probably importing too as it will no doubt be region-locked).

I Agree, i also feel this way about the 3ds too though

The age old "yeah but can it run Crysis?" comes to mind. I have seen Crysis 2 on PC and both consoles and it really shows the age of the consoles.

They better not delay Skyward Sword to put it on the new console.

This thing better upscale original Wii games too.

^ Upscale Wii games? It's not a Wii, it's a new console. FFS. Do you also want it to massage your back for you while you play games?

Well if it's offering.

I wonder if they'll keep the BC to the cube though.

Nintendo systems for me are always the same. Give me a few hours and I could rant your ear off about the stupid crap Nintendo always seem to do, the issues I have with the hardware, stuff that annoys me with their business policy, and the never ending problem of third party support, shovelware, and dips in software flow from Nintendo themselves.

But I can (and do) rant about everyone. End of the day, I love Nintendo's games, and so I love the Wii.

Funny thing; I own more Wii games than I do GCN games. In fact, even though I could complain about hardware support from third parties, I think the Wii is packed full of fantastic and interesting games. As it is, I'm not disappointed with the software library.

Maybe its because I own a PC and I get plenty of that higher end hardware pushing software elsewhere. No idea. But what I do know is that over the course of the Wii's life I've had the pleasure of enjoying Wii Sports and Resort, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Red Steel 2, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Excite Truck and Bots, No More Heroes 1 and 2, MadWorld, House of the Dead: Overkill, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid Other M, de Blob, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Smash Bros Brawl, New Super Mario Bros, Zack & Wiki, Sin & Punishment 2, Punch-Out!!, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, GoldenEye, the Bit.Trip series, Dead Space Extraction, Mario Kart, Muramasa, Rabbids Go Home, Endless Ocean, and more.

Maybe you look at that software and go "it stinks! what crap!". Well, thats nice. Good for you. I dont really care thought, because I enjoyed them, and out of that library are among my favourite experiences this generation. Galaxy 2? No More Heroes? Prime 3? Would trade all your Uncharteds and Gears combined for just one of those. Not to mention the hundreds, literally hundreds, of hours spent playing Wii Sports with friends. When I first moved out of home and got my Wii that year, Wii Sports became a staple at our house nearly ever weekend. A bunch of guys and gals sitting around, chatting, having a drink, and passing the controller between one another for some casual gaming. How could that be disappointing?

So yeah, some areas of the Wii disappointed. That's the usual really. I can also see exactly why someone wouldn't be big on the Wii. If you cant hack the lower graphical power, or dont like your Mario and Metroids, or the more rusty experimental titles like No More Heroes, then that's cool. Fair reason to be disappointed.

But for me the Wii was worth every cent. It was worth buying it at launch, it was worth the hundreds of dollars I've put into software, and I've walked away from this generation happy as a pig in shit.

I'm not terribly surprised by this. Personally, I think it will roughly match the PS3/360 in terms of power, and sell for around $400-$500 when it first comes out. I think the Wii is starting to show its age, technically, since the PS3 has Move and the 360 has Kinect. Nintendo no longer has the point of difference that made the Wii so popular in the first place.

EDIT: Totally agree with Jarrod about the Wii. Well put. Also, why shouldn't a new console upscale old Wii games? We can watch upscaled DVD's, PS1 and PS2 games (well, if you have the original 60GB model for PS2 games), so a HD Nintendo console should be able to upscale Wii games. Galaxy would look fucking gorgeous in 1080p.

Yeah, Nintendo no longer has the point of difference because Sony and Microsoft copied Nintendo... now we're getting some info leaks about the new Nintendo console... place your bets on which of the other two companies will be first to copy! My money's on SONY. Couldn't come up with an original idea to save their lives. icon_razz.gif

Except motion control on a home consoles icon_razz.gif

I doubt they're going to actually do anything drastically new to copy though. My guess is it will probably just be a more powerful Wii.

Calm down folks already for godsakes.

Its only early and unconfirmed info at this time from third party. Obviosuly Ninty are working on a new console but only when they release the details then one can start drooling on the prospects.

Hard for companies to keep secrets with the internet age these days.

The Wii won this gen. No doubt. None expected this success especially after Sony's success last gen and motion control was unproven territory Ninty were heading into.

But Ninty (like Sebastien Vettel - hehe-) "do their own thing".

Ninty got owned in last gen. The GC was a good console even more powerful than PS2 but still lost resoundingly. Ninty arrogance has been blamed as a contributing factor, but thats another issue for another day.

This gen consoles hardware being almost 6 years old now, "more powerful than PS3/360" is hardly something to be excited about if you expecting more third party AAA titles.

Anyway regardless of what Ninty do, you know it will be awesome.

...?No he doesnt, he is just in the best car and has the most skill using it atm.

Back on track though. I agree, lets wait and see, Nintendo DO seem to do things first...

Bring on E3 (and the BF3 beta icon_razz.gif)

If by "win" he means "had the best software" or "was the best platform", then there is no definite answer, as it will differ from person to person and rightly so. Everybody has different taste.

If by "win" he means market share and profit, then yes, Nintendo smoked Sony and Microsoft out of the gate. The latter two didn't start turning profit until ~12 months ago.

Its a pointless argument.

Haha... sorry but this is hilarious after you've been all doom and gloom about Vega not being in the first character anouncement of SF x Tekken and claiming that Arcade Edition is going to ruin SSF4.

In terms of sales it deffintley did.
The Wii sold more then the 360 and PS3 combined.

I love how all these news sites basically just use each other as sources, and when traced back this is all just rumourmongering crap. icon_biggrin.gif

Seriously though, I wouldn't be overly surprised if this is true despite it meaning going back on their word of 10 years of Wii (which makes sense considering the Wii sucks and nobody buys them now).

But to say that it will be a SUPER HARDCORE ULTRA CONSOLE OF EPIC AWESOME EXTRAVAGANZEMENT is just a little extreme. Nintendo don't DO that. Nintendo are the Apple of gaming. Hardcore be damned. Thus, if this rumour is in any way true, I expect Nintendo to do something amazingly stupid to put off gamers like myself icon_razz.gif

Oh yeah, P.S. I'm back.

Nintendo didn't do this on one of there consoles.

The cube was more powerful then the PS2, and I'm pretty sure the 64 was more powerful then the PS1.
In all honesty, as long as this hardware recieves support for the "hardcore" game developers, and not run-down versions. Eg. "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" and "Ghostbusters: The Game".

If I can expect to be able to play games like Call of Duty on this machine, but still be able to get the same family entertainment the Wii already delivers, I would be pretty happy to buy it.

It's more like Nintendo's modern policy. DS, Wii and now 3DS, all weaker on the graphic output side of things. Yes the 3DS is a big jump on the DS, but it doesn't even look as good as the PSP which is about to be replaced by the NGP. I would call three consoles in a row a pattern icon_smile.gif
