Super Mario Galaxy 2 Release Date Confirmed

Wii News | Australians to get the first taste of Rock Mario in July.
Gamers eagerly awaiting the release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 will not have to wait much longer, with Nintendo confirming a release date of 1 July 2010 for the exclusive title. Whilst Australian fans will be waiting well over a month after the game is released in the US and almost 3 weeks after it's release in Europe, it is no doubt a relief to finally have a confirmed date to look forward to.

The release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Wii marks the first time that two 3D Mario platformers have been released on the one system. It also introduces the new Cloud and Rock suits, as well as bringing Yoshi, who is traditionally missing in most 3D Mario platformers, back in to the mix.

Woohoo I'm so looking forward to this, especially since my Wii hasn't had much use since I finished NSMBW.

Too right. Time to cancel my pre-order. Ninty does realise how hack-able their machine is and a staggered global launch will encourage naughty people to play naughty versions?

I, personally, won't, i love my SMG too much.

Rumour has it the reason our release has been pushed back so far is because the last we time we got a major Ninty game first it was pirated straight away.

@Andrew, still doesn't explain why Wii Sports Resort released here at the same time as overseas.

It might be because the game that was pirated was a Mario game and they are punishing us by releasing the next Mario game late?

Who knows? Nintendo Australia do but we never will because they are unwilling to explain to us why they delay games here. Other publishers on other platforms can distribute worldwide, so why can't Nintendo get their shit together? For a company that prides themselves on innovation they sure are shit at some things (region locking, online, release dates, transparency)

And anyway, didn't they earn a fuck ton of money from suing that arsehole who pirated the game? And isn't NSMB one of their biggest sellers? Piracy...pffft what a bull shit excuse.

I can't say I'm all that surprised though. Wasn't the first SMG delayed for roughly the same amount of time as well?

It's actually getting pushed back to coincide with the Toy Catalogue period.

Or to save shipping costs by sending by boat and sitting in customs for a fortnight?

As a paying customer (one of MANY in this country) that offends me.
When a publisher offends me (EA and Activision are common culprits) I let my wallet do the talking in the form of used games market.

Jesus Nintendo, talk about hitting 20,000 people for every 1 bad person.

This is just stupid.

You know, this is probably the fault of that guy who leaked New Super Mario Bros. Wii early. It was the very first copy to hit the internet, and came from Australia, some guy getting his copy early or whatever.

Nintendo were super pissed and this is probably their kneejerk reaction.

I don't think that piracy issue had anything to do with it.

Whenever a big Nintendo title is delayed in Australia, you constantly hear people crying that "Nintendo Australia don't have their act together!". No...

What's significant about a July 1 release for SMG2? Well... school holidays start July 2 in WA, NSW, SA and one week earlier in Vic and Qld. Coincidence? I think not. And this isn't the first time they've done this. Track the majority of their past major GC and Wii titles and you'll find a pattern.

Nintendo is a VERY shrewd company... They run the business for them and not for you.

Which doesn't make it any less annoying.
Rule number one, keep your fazers on stun...no wait that's not it. It's no customers = no company. And the most important customer is the loyal customer. The one who isn't completely over your uselessness that they import a game thus giving your local branch no profit. It's not the one-game-a-generation gamer Nintendo seem to be targeting these days. But I honestly fail how it would matter whether the game was released a day before the school holidays or two weeks before. In reality, parents find things for their kids to do and they're more inclined to buy some cheap piece of crap game because they know it only needs to hold their attention for two weeks then it's straight back to the closest thing to hell on earth. Does it really matter? Is some parent going to say, "well, this game was released two weeks ago! Dear lord, if only it were released yesterday...I might have bought it for little Billy who probably doesn't even give a shit about that old fart Mario anyway.". Are we that pathetic as a society that a game that is two weeks old is suddenly banished from our conciousness? Is it not still in the 'new releases' section? Is it not being promoted. People are still buying NSMB, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit. Were these released in the holiday period, and is all their success owed to that fact? Does it not depend entirely on a. whether the parent wants to fork out that amount of money, and b. the kid actually wants the game. Mario will sell because it's Mario. And honestly, the only thing Nintendo should be caring about is the overall sales of the game, not whether it sold well for one week because it was released in the school holidays. The game will sell regardless because a. it's Mario, and b. the Wii has nothing else. The Wii needs a great game now. It needs time for people to discuss it, recommend it - it needs to spread around so that people know about the game and want the game. And lastly, all of this is negated by the fact that a lot of the Wii audience probably left school years ago.

Or, maybe you're right.

Think about it, why would Nintendo care? Even if you import it, they still get their cut.

Unless you're buying a used copy, Nintendo will get their cut on your copy no matter where you're buying it from.

Few reasons:

1. No profits are going to Nintendo Australia.

2. No profits are going to local Aussie companies whom Nintendo Australia rely on to peddle their products.

3. Less Nintendo sales here, less need for Nintendo Australia.

You can bet your arse if you asked Nintendo Australia whether importing hurts them, they'd say yes.

Yes, looking at the big picture it's about as useless as a person being a vegetarian, but that's not really the point of taking a stand now is it? icon_razz.gif

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Nintendo. They've been giving me the shits ever since I became consciously aware of them 'screwing' us. Remember the six month delay of the release of Metroid Prime for the GC? It was released in April 2003... the day before school holidays. I remember that too well. And that's SEVEN years ago now. For a more recent one, care to look when Super Paper Mario was released here?

Basically, Nintendo have been at this game for a LONG time. Why? Obviously because it's working. So it's all good and well to say that they're screwing their loyal customers or that importing doesn't help their local branch (not quite true, Nintendo AU answers to Nintendo Europe, so importing from Europe yields them the same result), but they're obviously doing that which helps them the best. The sales charts seem to sing the same song.

No, the truth doesn't make it any less annoying, but I guess I just like to set the facts straight. And yes, it sucks beyond suck. SMG2 would've made a swell present...
I know. I've just had one too many bourbons and feel like ranting about something I pretty much know nothing about. It's not an attack on you.

Video game kids are going to want to get a game to play in the holidays. Now what difference does it make to the kid whether SMG was released two weeks prior, or the day before he went on break? If the kid wants the game he'll get the game. He may have to wait two weeks to get the game, but he'll still get it. And, most importantly, what does it matter to Nintendo whether the kid buys the game two weeks early or during the holidays? Nothing. Nintendo want the sale, whether the game is bought on release date, two weeks after, or two years after. It doesn't matter when. Either Nintendo don't have faith that their product isn't going to be relevant in two weeks, which we both know is a crock of shit, or they're releasing these games during school holidays because they think it makes a difference. I'd like to see the proof that it does. I'm not denying it, I'd just like to see the proof. But I won't because Nintendo Australia are so damn cagey about the issue. It's almost as if Nintendo Australia think first week sales are absolutely important in determining whether the game is going to be hit or not. Or maybe they get a little bonus if they sell x amount of copies. I don't necessarily think that is true, because even today we see people buying some old Wii games and not others.

I know what you are saying, I really do. I just don't think it matters a great deal whether the game is released two weeks earlier than the school holidays instead of right on it. I'm sure I'm wrong, but I'd like to be told why from NAL instead of feeling disappointed in their actions all the time.

We cool dude icon_y1.gif

I probably should have added that I agree with a lot of what you said. And in an ideal world we would get the game at the same time as the rest... but what can you do? Just enjoy it when it does come I suppose icon_smile.gif
