New Mistwalker game finally unveiled

Wii News | It's not Lost Odyssey 2 or Blue Dragon 2 and it's not even for the Xbox 360.
Mistwalker Studios has been hinting on a major new project for quite sometime. This project turns out to be The Last Story and it is being developed exclusively for the Nintendo Wii.

Ever since it’s inception, Mistwalker Studios have been rooting for Microsoft. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey were exclusive to the Xbox 360 but then, due to financial troubles, the studio worked on a few low key Nintendo DS games and canned it’s third Xbox 360 project called Cry On.

The Last Story is quite an ironic title as it almost shares the same meaning as Final Fantasy. Most gamers will be disappointed by the fact that this is not heading to Xbox 360, but fortunately for Wii owners, they've got another potential gem to look forward to.

You can check out the official site here, which for now, features the logo and some lovely music.

Good thing they listened to their fanbase and are releasing the exact game we all wanted....

/sigh.

Lost Odyssey was the best RPG this Gen, was sooo looking forward to a sequel.

Oh well. Im sure this new game will be awesome too. I think Mistwalker is the only developer that still makes good old fashioned RPGs.

I wonder if it's going to use the Vitality Sensor somehow. Could be interesting I guess.

This game will be rad! It will be so rad that it shall spawn numerous sequels to a point where Sakaguchi will invest millions into the production of a large scale hollywood movie with the same name.

The music on the site is very nice. I'm kind of looking forward to how it turns out.

Hazzah! for what looks to be a decent wii game. Sucks that its not more Lost Odyssey though it will be good to bring the wii back out of retirement, 2010 is looking better everyday for that little white box.

I can understand why they decided to develop for the Wii with their financial troubles, but I'm eagerly awaiting another 360 title from these folks.

I think the reason the game is for the Wii is because Hironobu Sakaguchi intended Lost Odyssey to be the Xbox's "Final Fantasy". However now that Final Fantasy has gone Multi-platform, his dream of Lost Odyssey been the new Final Fantasy for the Xbox is long gone. I believe he made this on Wii because he wants this to be his "Final Fantasy" for the Wii.

You do realise that a Final Fantasy game on the Wii already exists, right? It may not be one of the main stream of games, but The Crystal Bearers is still a Final Fantasy game. So unless the development process involves a time machine, he's just a little bit late to be creating Final Fantasy for the Wii.

Besides which, who cares if Final Fantasy XIII is multiplatform, from the looks of it the game is much more linear than most of the Final Fantasy games, whereas Lost Odyssey was much more like traditional JRPG, allowing for exploration of towns and side quests etc.

Personally I can't wait for Final Fantasy XIII, but I still adore Lost Odyssey and any other traditional JRPG style game. There's nothing I find more relaxing than coming home after a long day at work and just sinking into a well designed fantasy universe. Hopefully this game is a good solid RPG, even if I do have to play it on the Wii. Not that I dislike the Wii, but it tends to be monopolised by my partner.

I think Jahanzeb kind of touched on the reasoning behind switching to Wii for this game in the article:

Mistwalker is looking at releasing a game on the console with the largest install-base (Wii), no doubt with the goal of creating a giant wad of money to get themselves out of the red. It doesn't necessarily spell the end of Mistwalker on 360. Hopefully they'll re-coup some losses and be back stronger than ever.

Strange that those chose the Wii for their next venture, but I guess they have a reasonably good idea of what they are doing.

Hopefully they will focus on a more well rounded rpg this time around, otherwise they could be in trouble.

I want more Lost Odyssey more than any other JRPG. Disappointment QQ

I thought it would actually be important to mention the game is being published and most likely funded entirely by Nintendo. That's why the game is coming out on the Wii.

It most likely wouldn't exist any other way. So this "bububu Xbox 360!" stuff is pretty ridiculous. Gotta love the little jab that somehow Wii owners aren't gamers.

Poorly written article.

I think he means when you said that most gamers will be disappointed it isn't on 360 but Wii Owners should be happy.

but...i said Wii owners have another gem to look forward to...another implies that there are more good games coming on it....

is due to the fact that blue dragon and lost odyssey are amazing and we really want to see more of it.

But didn't microsoft fund the development of mistwalker? shouldnt that be enough reason to expect more on the x360??

It's also interesting to note that the game is supposed to be heavily involved in 'human emotion', so you'd think they would want to use better hardware to include better models, detail and facial animation. Not a 'jab' at wii, i have one and a x360 so ill buy the game regardless.

Based on that, here are my predictions:

  • The Last Story will utilise the vitality sensor.
  • Xmas 2010 release, coinciding with release of vitality sensor.
  • The range of emotions will comprise of stressed out and not stressed out. That is all.
  • The novelty of using the vitality sensor will wear off after about 10 minutes.

The idea I got was that Microsoft help fund the creation of Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, not the studio itself. Once the games were out and released, the deal between them would be ended.

This new game is getting a similar treatment from Nintendo

I think that's what he meant actually. Supposedly Mistwalker still owe Microsoft one more exclusive game or something as well.

doesn't seem like the best option making a game on the wii if they need money. aren't third party games still tending to not sell that well on the wii?

No, a quick google seach tells me it was a two game game deal, the two games being Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. Unless it was a new deal they don't owe Microsoft anything. But back in 2006 he said Blue Dragon sequel was in pre-production and he expected it on 360. Maybe it turned out to be BD Plus but I'm pretty sure he said he wanted BD not LO to become the New Final Fantasy on 360 so the sequel should be different like how final fantasy games are but using similar elements.

And remember Mystwalker only does the design, story and music of the games they make, they always co-devolop games with the other devoloper making the rest of the game so maybe Nintendo are devoloping it with them making it easier having the same devoloper and publisher.

Yea I always found that extremely odd. They basically create the game design document and then oversee a development studio create it.
