E3 2009: New Super Mario Bros. Wii announced

Wii News | Old school platforming ahoy.
Nintendo's E3 2009 press conference has started with a bang, with a new Mario game titled New Super Mario Bros. Wii leaving the audience in awe as four players took the stage.

The title is a 2D sidescrolling platformer similar to New Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo DS, played by holding the Wii remote sideways to recreate the feeling of the classic NES controller. Up to four players can join in at once, with playable characters including Mario, Luigi and different coloured Toads.

Nintendo ended the demonstration by confirming that the game will be released in time for Christmas 2009. We'll post some media as it becomes available.

Didn't care about Super Mario Galaxy (don't hurt me) but this is a must-buy for me.

I thought it looked really good too, New Super Mario Bros. was really good IMO and this looks even better.

New Super Mario Bros. can go to bed compared to the old-school NES Mario Bros. The original was massively responsive. The controlling on the new one was all lagged. There was like 30 frames of Mario changing direction and you lost momentum after changing direction. It was utterly horrible imo.

I just hope this is more difficult than the first one. Or at least has some really difficult levels hidden in the game.

Different coloured toads is kind of fail. There's plenty of characters they could of used. They could've made it more like Four Swords/SMB2(US) as a result, the helicopter power pretty much confirms there will be no advantage in using a different character.

Very disappointed in this one. Another game Nintendo could have made in 10 days...

Is this a WiiWare title?

4 player co-op 2D Mario...

I think my pants just exploded.

I can't even begin to imagine the insanity that will bring... get in some good, fiendish oldschool level design and add in plenty of bits that require skillful co-operation between players and this could be one of the best games of the year.

Why all the negativiy? NSMB on DS was one of my favourite Nintendo and even Mario platfomer games. I played through that game to completion countless times and it was even one of the very few games I enjoyed enough to attempt to speed run it. And I think that co-op would make this game just that much better.

I didn't really dig how NSMB DS went really back to basics and removed stuff like Yoshi and flying power-ups.That being said, it was still loads of fun.

And now, Yoshi's in this one. And so are flying power ups. It looks to me like they might be advancing the game to the SMB3/SMW side of things. Which, when coupled with 4 player shenanigans, sounds awesome.

Also it has a penguin suit, damn it. A penguin suit. And the Koopalings have returned. This is going to be awesome.

(though replace yellow and blue toads with wario and waluigi kthnxbai)

I think this is the best news from E3 so far. Classic Mario gaming with three buddies at the same time. Galaxy was great but it doesn't beat running and jumping with some friends. Even better it due this year =)

Hopefully there'll be a lot of new levels in the game and not just a rehash of those from NSMB, but either way, I'm sold.

I was happy but disappointed simultaneously with this announcement.

The base gameplay will no doubt be fun to anyone who enjoyed previous Mario games, and the inclusion of coop looks great, I'd love to have a couple of the local PALGNers around to do coop with Dani and I in this.
Having watched some of the direct feed video from Nintendo's press site, the frame rate is amazingly smooth, AT LEAST 60fps, if not 100, it looks incredibly good in motion.

I'm a bit disappointed though that they have chosen to use set design from the original Super Mario Bros. again, there's so much empty space on screen, and the levels all look like things we've seen in the NES version, the Gameboy colour version & New Super Mario Bros., it's bland, and uninspired.

Had they been a little more adventurous, they could have kept the whole 3D sidescroller feel, which is cool, but gone with level design based off one or more of the other games in the proper Super Mario Series.

Seeing SMB2, SMB3 and my personal favourite, SMW based content and level design would have been quite exciting, as it would get away from the overused designs from the original game. Super Mario World was an evolution and improvement of SMB, and it would have been the perfect base for a game like this.

The DS has a New Mario Bros, the Wii should be going the extra mile and doing a New Mario World.

Props for adding in Ridable Yoshi's though! icon_smile.gif

Agree with DIU, Wario and Waluigi would have been good instead of the Toads. Could sound weird having them work together, but maybe Wario and Waluigi are in it for the money and the gang bang after rescuing the princess, instead of just doing it because it's nice and possible cake.

This is gonna be a fantastic game.
Cant wait for it!!

I always figured that Nintendo would release a New Super Mario World on DS after NSMB was such a success, but sadly I don't think they will. That would own though. SMW > SMB (1,2 or 3)

I'm looking forward to this game, one of the highlights of the nintendo press conference along with Golden Sun.
