Red Steel 2 officially announced

Wii News | More shoot-and-slash action coming this Christmas.
Today, Ubisoft officially announced Red Steel 2, exclusively for the Nintendo Wii. The sword-and-gun action title is being developed by Ubisoft Paris and will be on store shelves in time for the festive season.

The sequel to the original Red Steel title will take place in a desert-bound, state-of the-art city. The emphasis of the game will once again be on shooting and slashing your way out of trouble using the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Red Steel 2 is set to take full advantage of the new Wii MotionPlus accessory, with the ability to sense the strength of the swing and create even more precise movements.

We're sure to hear more about the game in the coming months, especially with E3 just around the corner, so stay tuned to PALGN for all the latest information. In the meantime, you can head over to the official Red Steel 2 website at www.redsteel2.com.

- Still no blood.
- No multiplayer.
- Cel-shaded.

It's had a development time ~twice (probably more) than the original, with the entire focus being on single player, and having the original version of RS2 scrapped for a higher quality, so we'll see.

Red Steel was a lot more ambitious than people give it credit for. It's quite nice to look at for most part and, I feel, it was ultimately hampered by a rushed development time and controller limitations. I think people just get caught up on how the final game didn't play like how they imagined it.

Fingers crossed. If they can deliver a feature packed quality single player I'll be all over it.

Hopefully it will be good this time.

with motion plus this might be good, while the shooting in the first one was a bit broken it was playable, it was the sword fights that were so broken that i couldnt finish the game, fixed sword fights and with shooting mechanics pretty solid on the wii now, this should be interesting
Ok, time to admit it. I LOVED Red Steel. Absolutely loved it. I found no problems with the control scheme, and although I was aware it wasn't perfect, I really enjoyed the hell out of the game. The bunny level in particular was absurdly fun. I didn't care to let the flaws that everyone was pointing out ruin the fun. Truth be told, it was the first FPS that I truly enjoyed and the game that made me think twice about dismissing the genre. Now I look forward to hearing about the latest FPS. So I will be picking this one up without hesitation. If it sucks, so be it. Back to the store it goes. If I get as much enjoyment out of it as I did the first, fantastic.

People give Red Steel a bad wrap, more-so that it deserves, because the game was ultimately way overhyped and UbiSoft's fail train of Wii development adds insult to injury.

I had my fun with Red Steel at launch, considering, and while I now look back and really don't enjoy it, I can appreciate what it offered.

It had production values higher than most Wii games to date. Awesome music, really quite awesome graphics (for most part) that beat out most Wii games since, and genuinely ambitious gameplay.

Ubi really wanted to make an awesome motion controlled shooter/sword fighter. Problem? The Wii remote alone just isn't good enough. NO developer since, Nintendo included, have made a melee weapon combat game that fully revolves around motion controls. All the good melee fighters use a combination of buttons for basic attacks and simplistic gestures for combos and super moves.

Had Red Steel done that it would have been better, but different from what the developers wanted to do; motion controlled sword combat.

And sure, the gun combat was broken, but the fundamentals were there. It was the sloppy bounding box and turn speed that really broke it, as well as some pointer difficulties. These are things that could be easily fixed.

Not to mention the development period was very short. They were one of the first developers to get Wii devkits, but they still rushed the game for launch.

When you consider these I believe a sequel, with the right direction, has the potential to be quite good. I'm glad this has a longer development period, I'm glad they're still shooting for the stars (there's NO melee M+ we know of besides the Wii Sports Resort minigame), and I'm glad they had the brains to scrap the first version because they didn't feel it was up to standards.

If dedication pays off we're in for some fun.

I found it slightly disturbing. icon_eek.gif

I had fun with Red Steel as well, probably because the multiplayer reminded me of Goldeneye.
