Suda51 discusses No More Heroes 2

Wii News | Including the open world and why the Wii.
In a recent interview with industry website Gamasutra, Grasshopper Manufacture's CEO Goicha Suda discussed the upcoming sequel to the excellent No More Heroes titled No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle.

Of note, he commented on the game's somewhat criticised open world aspect. When asked about taking the sandbox element further in the sequel, Suda responded, "Yeah, we'll once again manage to do what we want to do with realising the open world, but expect big changes for No More Heroes 2's open world."

The choice to release No More Heroes on the Wii has been heavily scrutinised. When asked why the Wii was chosen, Suda said, "One of the main reasons why we're back on Wii is because of the controller. I wanted to keep the game's controller gimmick, so that's why the fighting was more fitting on Wii, rather than on other platforms."

No More Heroes 2 is scheduled for release in 2010. In the interim, if you haven't played the original already, you might want to check out our review.

It was heavily scrutinised for being on the Wii? First I've heard of that.

Yeah, quite a few people thought the game's potential would've been much greater on the 360/PS3.

I'm one of them that said, I don't mind it's on the Wii, do need some action games to play on the Wii.

I find it difficult to comprehend that the game's potential would have been greater on the PS3/X360. A lot of the faults were design faults, not hardware limitations or anything like that.

I personally think the little Wii remote interactions (eg: sword swipes, wrestling moves) made it a title I'd rather on the Wii than anywhere else.

Visuals are the only thing I could see getting a boost on other systems.

Unbelievable, the one hardcore title released for Wii and the PS360 fans bitched about not having it.

Wiimote+ is going to piss alot of people off i guess lol

I bought a Wii just for it and afterwoulds thought it would have played better on the 360. The only cool wii-mote interaction I can think of is the holding the controller high or low for high or low stances.

, I advise that you import the US version and utlise the homebrew feature of your Wii. It's so worth it..

If No More Heroes would make Suda & co some extra coin, why not release it across various platforms? Im sure it wouldnt hurt and give people that don't own a Wii a chance to enjoy his work, so long as it is a quality release and not a watered 'up' port..

Maybe if it did appear on the HD consoles it would be allowed to have blood in aus. They let the ninja gaiden games through with similar levels of cartoony violence.

Maybe it was because Wii is generally thought of a family console.

It was never not allowed to have blood, the lack of blood was a decision made by Suda not some executive mandate forced upon him.

That said, playing US version, blood is the shit.

What Benza said.

NMH was never censored by our ratings board. Rising Star Games, or whoever published it, chose to make the PAL released based off the Japanese released, not the US release. The Japanese release was always bloodless, thus we got the bloodless version too.

And to those saying the game would have been better on a high-definition systems; every game could theoretically be better, but that doesn’t mean it would actually end up being better.

No More Heroes was a relatively low budget niche title. Developing for the Wii is significantly cheaper than developing for the Xbox360, and the PS3 is even more expensive again.

The reason you don’t see a plethora of artistically challenging and bizarre games on these platforms is because the financial risk is too high. A vast majority of publishers will look at No More Heroes and give it the bird. Why should they invest into a title that probably wont sell?

Fact of the matter is that losses on the Wii are less impactful than they are on other systems (see: Free Radical and Factor 5). That is largely why the platform was chosen.

And, as I said, most of the criticisms against No More Heroes were due to a sloppy engine and some gameplay design quirks. What would a high-definition system add to the experience? Crisper graphics. What about the gameplay? More fleshed out city? Not a system issue, but a design choice.

Wow, really. So it had nothing to do with the ratings board this time. That's odd.

I guess if we got the same one as Japan then we got the official version lol.

Anyway, I think they would have to have violence in a 360/PS3 version if they would want to sell it. Not that violence should sell games, games like LBP are awesome, but it does.

Just remember it wasn't rated MA it was only rated M for moderate violence, sexual references and coarse language.

I'm pretty sure it was released on the Wii due to budget reasons. It's a Suda 51 game.

EatChildren is right.

Yeah, I don't own a Wii so I haven't really been following NMH. I just found the topic interesting.
