High Voltage ask gamers for control ideas

Wii News | Fancy a chance at helping design The Conduit?
Are you tired of lousy controls in FPS? Think you’ve got a better idea of how a character should throw a grenade or switch between weapons? Well, now you have a chance to voice your opinions to High Voltage Software, who announced on Friday that they’re accepting fan-created control mappings for their upcoming Wii exclusive title, The Conduit.

According to High Voltage, the idea behind the competition is so that they can help bring a better experience to the game. “From the start of the project our primary goal has been to make the definitive first person shooter for the Wii, and specifically for core gamers. Asking core gamers for their input is just a logical extension of that rationale,” commented Kerry J. Ganofsky, Chief Executive Officer.

To enter, gamers simply have to write down the individual control inputs for specific functions (see below) as if they were using a standard Wii remote and Nunchuck combination. High Voltage also encouraged gamers to feel free to use motion controls in their mapping ideas, though they ask that they’re described clearly enough so that the development team can implement them. The required functions include:

1) Move Forward/Back
2) Strafe Left/Right
3) Jump/Activate
4) Shoot Weapon
5) Target Lock
6) Crouch
7) Reload Weapon
8) Scope/Binocular Mode
9) Switch Between Weapons Carried
10) Switch Between Grenades Carried
11) Pause Menu
12) Swap Between Weapon Carried and Weapon on Ground
13) Equip ASE (All-Seeing-Eye) / Special
14) Aim Reticule/Turn Camera
15) Melee Attack
16) Throw Grenade

Entries can be sent to Feedback@High-Voltage.com with the subject line of “Conduit Controller Mapping Contest”. The contest closes on November 14, and the winner will be awarded with an “appropriate in-game credit.” For more information on the competition, click here.

Special thanks to forum member S.Jaworski for the heads up.

I must say, i really respect that. Obviously, I hope they're conducting their own control options, but it's good to know that they're listening to what gamers want. That being said, I hope they implement whatever the popular system seems to be.

zomg it could be like the james bond games where the control schemes have names, and one could be the "FAN NAME" control scheme...

Exactly what I was thinking. Such a friendly approach is certainly a step in the right direction and brings to light GoldenEye's huge control options. I think that a major contributor to increasing the quality of gameplay is certainly a diverse choice of control schemes in a title.

And here I was you'd have a lot of "left is now up lolz" control sets. But damn, if the prize was credit in design and then royalties per sale I might be interested.. otherwise, no intellectual soup for joo!

Actually, I thought they were doing it because they're too scared of taking a risk and trying something so they're copping out and having a contributer go the hard yards. The question is, will everyone agree with this person's idea? The answer, highly unlikely.

I find it a long shot if High Voltage go with a single control input for this title. Given the possibility of many effective combinations someone could come up with, regardless of how unorthodox they proved to be, it would be a very limiting exercise to just have the game rely on a solitary input measure. I would say that the chances of multiple configurations being present in The Conduit is a very likely outcome.
