Virtual Console updated

Wii News | Jump through those rings of joy.
It’s Friday again and you all know what that means – the Australian Virtual Console has been updated. This week, Nintendo have added just one game to the Sega Master System library, but it’s none other than a remake of the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

Originally released in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog was the last game to be released on the Sega Master System in America. While technically a remake of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive, the Master System version is unique in its own right. There are new stages, new bosses and even different music playing in the background. Another major change is that the Chaos Emeralds are now hidden in the regular stages, while the Special Stages contain extra lives and continues for you to pick up. At 500 points, it’s a must for all Sonic fans.

Never was a fan of the Master System Sonic, felt it was a backwards step considering the Mega Drive had Sonic first. It would've been nice getting 2 games though.

I wouldn't call it a port. The levels were all completely different aside from some looking like Green Hill, Labyrinth and Scrap Brain zones.

I quite enjoyed it, I used it with my Master System adapter on my Game Gear (you couldn't see jack in the native Game Gear versions). Unfortunately my switch where my consoles are hooked up to doesn't seem to be working.

As a Sonic fan I'm actually not happy to hear this.
For the love of christ Nintendo. We want S3+K, stop messing us about.

As for the game itself; In it's day I did enjoy it; really haven't played it lately. Probably should.

Theres actually supposed to be 3 games, as Europe gets two Commodore 64 titles as well. We get screwed in that department, just like we did before Turbografx was added here.

This Wikipedia timeline says that Sonic 2 was released on SMS in America, and it seems strange that the game was specifcally made for PAL and Brazil, and Sonic Chaos after that.

I simply can not agree with you more Joseph. This is one game I have the fondest memory of ever playing. I remember I got it brand new for just $20 from Archie Martin Vox and loved it to death. The sensation of speed was amazing for a Master System title and I must have played it over a thousand times.

In the end, I didnt play the game - I felt it. It wasnt a fact of co-ordinating button presses to coincide with where I wanted Sonic to be onscreen; it was more of an instinctive sense in knowing exactly how long, and how hard to regulate pressure on the controller to blaze a perfect route through the game's hazards and enemies, all while collecting rings and item boxes without having to back track often.

I got my cousin to record a playthrough of it for me, but it's long since lost. A shame, because that's the closest I've ever come to creating a symphony icon_smile.gif
