Wii storage solution in the pipeline

Wii News | Says Laurent "geeks and otaku" Fischer.
Laurent Fischer, a main marketing sort over at Nintendo Europe, has told GamesIndustry.biz that Nintendo are looking at ways to solve the Wii's storage problem.

"We're working on a solution," said Fischer. "We definitely detect that they [gamers] are serious and we know there is an issue in this, so it's something that we're working on."

However, it seems that this solution won't involve any sort of external storage.

"Definitely there's no plan to issue hardware, an external hard drive, but we know that we have an issue in that area," he added. "It's very obvious and we're perfectly aware of it, but there's nothing we can say beyond this."

You sure, Laurent? Sure you don't want to tell us?

"...this area is fully handled by the development team in Japan. It's very linked to the overall strategy; that's something they're working on."

Guess not then. These comments come from the very same Laurent Fischer who last week called critics of the Wii's lack of storage "geeks and otaku", then quickly retracted the statement shortly after.

He took the opportunity to again apologise for the incident.

"I really didn't use that terminology to describe the Nintendo consumer - it was something related basically to myself and to the journalists attending," Fischer stated. "It was a joke I made on myself and somehow it's been confused and taken out of context to define those consumers.

"I understand I have created a lot of offence with people. And for me it's very, very important to clarify this - that's not the kind of thing I've been saying in. Disappointment in the community is something I was really affected by."

So no HDD? Okay that means you are going to free the SD card so we can play straight from it? Right? Right?!

All they have to do is open up the SD Card for playing VC/Wii Ware games and using DLC, and everything's good.

I like it when US/European reps give their take on what Nintendo are doing. They have no idea what Nintendo Japan are up to which control everything. They are all puppets and on a need-to-know bases!

Anyway, I've always thought they would allows games to be played off a SD card at some point. Maybe a combination of installing something on the Wii itself and having the ROM/Wiiware title stored on the SD card. I mean, I can see why they are taking their time and getting it right. You don't want it to be easily hacked and everybody filling up their SD card with downloaded ROMs off the net.

^ I honestly hadn't thought about exploiting whatever it is they are putting together.
Maybe that's all they were concerned with this whole time?

I always feel bad for the person I'm angry with.
They're really sorry so I start feeling like I've done something wrong.

In this case I'm sure we all could have taken what he said out of
context of the actual interview, but I'm still gald we did, because the
uproar seems to have affected them in some small way. icon_smile.gif

I'd be over the moon with the ability to play off an SD card - even if it was Nintendo brand.

This announcement would've excited me a couple of months ago but after this Freeloader news and the fact that Wiiware games have been out for a couple of weeks and I haven't been able to buy them because of storage issues means I basically don't care anymore.

Being able to play off the SD card would be the best solution imo.

I have prepared an open letter to all employees of Nintendo:

Dear All,

Kindly shut you filthy noise holes until you can provide us with a workable solution to the Wii storage issue, which can honestly be called an 'abortion of design', or at least have some news to offer us that doesn't essentially take the form of spitting in the faces of your customers.

Love and Kisses,
Karai

I was wondering do you think there holding out till e3 so they announce wii version 2 aka with big hard drive? Or would it be way way to early. I am just thinking out loud here.

the idea is not that difficult to me. the wii needs more storage. the answer is to add more storage. how does every other piece of technology on the planet do this? they add storage. just do it nintendo. add a hard drive. make storage card access available to be played from

i cant comprehend why the company is spending so much time trying to figure out a 'new' way to do it. they have shown us all that they have innovaton, but not everything you do have to be different. sometimes the easiest way can be the best way too.

I think the main issue with this is allowing the user to execute a program from a storage device they can write to. Piracy is something that cannot be beaten. The Xbox was first hacked by downloading an executable that disguised itself as a Splinter Cell save file. So giving hackers an easy access point is like painting a big target on themselves.

For that reason I highly doubt that Nintendo will allow you to execute a program from the SD card. I'd say a HDD is far more likely.

This is what happens when you try to get the cheapest console on the market.

For the record I own a Wii and I love it.

Yeah - "working on it" --- Wii 2 with hi-def and storage for my 2 cents.......

Sounds like they got my letter. icon_wink.gif

Dear Nintendo,

If you don't get off your asses and start working on a solution to the Wii's storage issues, I will personally mail you a 120GB HDD so that you may study it and its incredible storage capabilites. If no response is given, I am prepared to develop and produce a suitable solution, with all profits from sales being forwarded to me.

Looking forward to your reply,

Adam

im hoping that their storage solution isnt a wiiware games size cap, I cant have been the only person to think of that as a possible (if not terrible) solution to the storage problem

I'm just wondering how they didn't just make a new Wii Base that contains the flash memory similar to the iPods.

That would force people who want more storage space, to have their wii vertically, though (bear in mind some people's AV setups with TV cabinets/etc might not allow this).

SD/SDHC support would be the easiest solution, since it requires virtually no manufacturing work on their part. I don't care if they force me into formatting an SD card to some proprietary file system to prevent hacking (not that it will do much good), SD cards cost virtually nothing these days ($13 for 2GB at MSY).

I so think this e3 they will address this. I can just feel it in the bones!

I don't keep up with Wii stuff much - but don't they have USB slots on the Wii? So therefore all they have to do is put through a software update and use any old usb hard drive... is it really that hard? What are they trying to do??

As ugh said - playing it off the SD card is the easiest solution....

Now that I read that the solution won't be in the form of Hardware, it's going to be support for running things off a USB Stick or SD/MMC Card. I've always wanted to literally lose my DLC in my bedroom.

I would be happy with reading VC and WiiWare titles from SD but a HDD would be nice, even a USB external one.

Knowing Nintendo they will release just a new model Wii with a whopping 4GB!

Exactly. We probably know about as much as they do about NoJ's plans.

Nintendo of Japan's secrecy seems to rival that of most military institutions.
