'There is no casual gaming' claims Nintendo

Wii News | It is not the casual gaming that bends. It is only yourself.
Laurent Fischer, Nintendo Europe's senior marketing director has denied the existence of casual gaming in a comment to CVG. Instead, Fischer contends, "there is just a different way to play."

Fischer's comments come after years of debate about the emerging role of casual gaming in the industry, and indeed, whether such a phenomenon can be said to exist. "For me, you are a gamer or non-gamer," claims Fischer. This certainly mirrors Nintendo's approach in recent years of creating so-called 'bridge games' which target both seasoned gamers and the unexperienced. "Someone who is fifty-years old who only plays Brain Training, but plays it like a core gamer is a core gamer," Fischer added.

Fischer also acknowledged a level of stigma around the term casual. "I don't like this word casual so much. Because people consider that casual needs to be something easy." Relatedly, we can assure all readers that reports of PALGN staff causing serious injury to themselves whilst playing Wii Fit are grossly exaggerated.

i would say if someone played games maybe once or twice a week or only when friends come over they would be considered a casual gamer. its like saying there are no casual drinkers, only alcoholics and non alcoholics.

So what to we call people who only buy 2-3 games a year and only buy game based on pretty box arts and play for less than 3 hours a week.

Here here to that. Maybe they are just trying to justify thier lack of support for the hard core gamer. I would love to see nintendo bring out some horror game rated MA with dificulty on par to ninja gaiden and claim thats 'for gamers' even the 60 year old grandma who playes mario kart

Being an alcoholic means being addicted to alcohol. You can drink once a week with friends, or every night after a hard day of work, and not be an alcoholic.

Just in the same way that you can play a game once in a while, or everyday, and not be a video game addict.

You've basically said, with your analogy, that there are only people who don't play games, and people who are addicted to them. That's not the point Nintendo is trying to make.

I think you're taking that analogy a little to literally icon_wink.gif

Wow, thanks for that...

People going on about casual and hardcore gamers, now that you bring up casual sex in comparison... all I can think about is hardcore sex. icon_confused.gif

Maybe I was already thinking that before you said anything. I just don't know anymore...

This announcement is about as sensical as Kellogg's coming out and saying "there's no breakfast, only lunch". Why on earth would Nintendo deny that their consumers exist?

And therein lies the answer - the "casual gamers" who have Wii's, or play the Sims, do not consider themselves to be gamers at all. Nintendo is trying to force a change in mentality, and although they've picked a funny way to do it, it's certainly good for the gaming industry if more people stop pretending they hate games even though they play them, and admit that they are gamers.

It's because the label is kinda stupid. There are only really people who play games occasionally and people who play games a lot. It kinda goes along with Nintendo's current philosophy in which their games and the Wii itself are aimed at everybody. And they're marketing them that way, trying to smudge out the boundaries (casual and hardcore) that other companies are using for their marketing. Hell, it seems to be working for them......Although, I'm probably on the periphery of this argument anyway, I don't really even like the term gamer.

'Casual Gamers' sounds like some kind of terrible menswear store. Conjures up images of men looking of into the distance with jackets slung over their shoulders.

You mean what if you play hardcore games casually and mini games a
lot? That makes you a gamer in my books.

I also think the term 'casual gamer' is a bit stupid, but I don't think it's possible to
play a 'casual game' a lot, that stops the game being a casual one... right?

I would assume by 'casual games' he means Wii [blank], Singstar, Buzz, Guitar Hero, Mario Party / other minigame compilations and the like.
