High Voltage working on Wii shooter

Wii News | The company calls it The Conduit, and thinks other Wii developers aren't trying hard enough.
Developer High Voltage has revealed to IGN that it's slaving away over a brand new first-person shooter designed from the ground up for the Nintendo Wii, entitled The Conduit.

In the game, players will take control of Agent Ford and attempt to unravel the secret behind the alien invasion of Washington. Of course, to do this, lots of guns (used with the games customisable control system) will be involved.

In the process of showing off this game to IGN, High Voltage made its feelings towards some other Wii developers completely clear, calling them out for not really trying to push the machine.

"We think it's a real shame that publishers and developers aren't taking advantage of the technical possibilities of the Wii platform. Most Wii games don't even look as good as the later day PS2 titles and that's a real slap in the face to consumers," said High Voltage boss, Kerry Ganofsky. "We believe that third-party developers need to step up to the plate and deliver. The Wii platform is capable of a lot more than what consumers have seen so far. We're hoping to raise a new bar."

Company creative guy, Eric Nofsinger, rather bluntly agreed.

"Most of the games on the Wii look like crap. We want to change that, so we've invested heavily in our Wii tech over the past year. Our goal is to be the most technically innovative Wii developer on the planet."

In addition, Nofsinger cited a catch 22 situation in regards to their being a perceived lack of 'mature' games in the Wii in comparison to other consoles.

"There is this pervasive and cyclical argument that Wii consumers don't want mature titles, when there aren't those types of products available to them. And even more frustrating is the claim that Wii consumers only care about great gameplay. Of course they care about gameplay, but we believe if given the choice, they would want great graphics as well. It's just a cop out. With Conduit, we are trying to make a Wii game that looks like a 360 title."

High Voltage hasn't had an abundance of success in the past (its latest effort is Ben 10: Protector of Earth), but has aimed high with The Conduit. The game currently has no publisher, but if things continue has the company hopes, we are sure that will change soon.

What ever could he mean?

I'm hoping these guys practice what they preach. It pisses me off to see such little effort being put into the visuals of Wii titles when you know that the Wii is clearly more capable of putting out better looking stuff.

It's laziness on the developers part and that is almost insulting. They know they can get away with it because it'll sell regardless. If High Voltage deliver on their promise, hopefully that'll show people that they don't have to settle for mediocre and in turn, will pressure more devs to step up and deliver.

Personally, I'm not too optimistic...

This is exactly the attitude I believe Nintendo are looking for. In the past, it has mainly been first party titles for their consoles that have really shone everytime, which I would go as far as saying, would be a little insulting for them too, if not utterly disappointing. Gone are the days when every game developed is lovingly created from the heart, so massive props go to High Voltage for taking a look at the fundamentals of entertainment and actually giving a damn about delivering this to the consumer. After all.. we're all in this for the fun factor right?

If they deliver on their ambitions, this will sell a strong message to the industry. Fingers crossed for their efforts!

IGN has the tech demo, and it's looking pretty hot, but since I'd say Super Mario Galaxy/Brawl(/Prime3? I don't know I gave up on enjoying Metroid after Prime 2) are the only good looking games on the Wii, that's not saying much. Shows potential at any rate.

Oh wait, Okami, but that looked hot on the PS2.

Here's hoping for the Rogue Squadron of the Wii, *crosses fingers* with better gameplay too!

@Capoeira: That Incredible Hulk screen shot made me cringe so bad.
