Developed by Hudson Soft, Star Solider R challenges players to achieve a high score in two main gameplay modes, 2-Minute and 5-Minute. As their name’s suggest, these modes have a time limit which players race against, all the while shooting at ships and any other objects which block their path. As you progress, you’ll be able to gather pick-ups that can upgrade your weapon or shield strength, as well as collect up to five orbiting satellites which you can use to defend your ship or send out as extra fire power. Apart from the different time limits, the 5-Minute mode will also feature a second level, complete with another boss to fight.
Once players are satisfied with their high scores, they can check online leaderboards to see how they stack up against other players in their region. Hudson have also hinted that there will be different ways to score bonus points, so Star Solider R will have some replay value for those wanting to be among the top-ranked players. Additionally, there will be a Quick Shot Mode that supposedly lets you ‘see if [you] have the fastest trigger fingers around.’ Finally, there will be three control methods to choose from including a combination of the Wii remote and Nunchuck, the Wii remote being held sideways, and the classic controller.
Star Solider R will be coming to WiiWare later this year. We’ll report back once Nintendo confirm when the service will be launching in PAL regions. In the meantime, we have included some screenshots in the media panel.
