According to Sega, Sonic Unleashed will run on a brand new engine called the ‘Hedgehog Engine,’ which has apparently been in development for three years and introduces ‘seamless 3D to classic 2D camera transitions.’ Additionally, the Hedgehog Engine provides visually stunning environments along with classic Sonic gameplay, which Sega have promised will ‘help re-define the experience for Sonic fans and newcomers to the franchise.’
Along with today’s announcement were details concerning the game’s plot: The evil Dr. Eggman is up to his old tricks again. This time he has broken the world into pieces, and Sonic needs to obtain the Chaos Emeralds to put them back together. The game will apparently span across the seven continents of the world, and challenge Sonic in ways never before seen. Apart from his trademark high-speed running, Sonic will also be able to engage in combat that will add ‘depth and variety to the game’.
“By combining rich and vibrant scenery with dynamic viewpoints Sonic Unleashed will provide an immersive 3D experience whilst keeping alive the 2D gameplay elements and fantastic worlds that Sonic fans know and love” commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director for SEGA Europe. “In addition to this classic Sonic gaming experience, when darkness sets in Sonic Unleashed players will be able to experience a completely new way to play as Sonic… making this his most exciting adventure yet!”
Sonic Unleashed is scheduled to be released later this year. We have included two new screenshots in the media panel.
