Mario and Sonic sells 5 million

Wii News | Who said Wii games don't sell?
Sega has announced that Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii has sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

This is hardly surprising though, as the title was the first time Mario and Sonic were paired up and in Australia, the game has consistently stayed in the sales charts, with the Wii version sitting at number two even now.

“With adored icons and fun game play, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has shot to the top of the sales charts and is clearly resonating with the growing audience of casual gamers that want an engaging and accessible gaming experience,” said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America.

Excellent news. It goes to show you with the right marketing and quality put into the final game, third party titles can sell.

As the article said though, both Mario and Sonic have a lot of appeal. Combining both franchises certainly helped. Hopefully we'll see more Mario and Sonic pair-ups in the future, clearly the public loves it.

I would really like to see some kind of platformer with the two of them, i'm not sure how it would work and i'm not sure if i'd like it to be 2D or 3D but if they could pull it off I would be very content to never play another game again.

Personally I'll be holding out for Mario and Sonic co-operative 3rd person ARPG set in a near-future post-apocalyptic Mushroom Kingdom. Doctor Robotnik could team up with Bowser and sic steam-punk styled robots and augmented Koopas against the dynamic duo.

It'd also have to be a John Woo Presents game.

Or does the argument that no 3rd party titles do well on Nintendo consoles hold up, because this has mario is it? icon_confused.gif

Well, other games such as the Resident Evil titles and Raving Rabbids have sold well. icon_smile.gif

So tell me ... is this game worth owning?

I've been eyeing it for some time but after the acrid taste the multiplayer from Sonic & the Secret Rings left in my mouth, i've been afraid to try it.

Well, personally, I don't like it, even though I love flail-around-look-like-a-douchebag games usually. But then my friends do like it, so what do I know?

Being able to put together a relay team of Jesus, Borat, Kim Jong Il and Peter Griffin is extremely awesome, though.
