Factor 5 working on new Kid Icarus game

Wii Rumour | Don't fly too close to the fun.
As we reported a couple of days ago, it was recently confirmed Rogue Squadron developer Factor 5 were returning to Nintendo consoles after a brief foray onto Sony's PlayStation 3 with the promising but critically flawed Lair. But what would they be working on? Factor 5 were one of the best in the biz in terms of technology last gen, and they seem enamored with the whole 'flying' genre, so most people assumed another Star Wars flight combat game was on the cards.

According to Kombo however, that game will be a revival of the long dormant Kid Icarus franchise. They also claim their 'credible source' says the game will not use the developer's previous GameCube graphics engine, which seems like a waste given the likely similarity of the gameplay, and that Rogue Squadron III was the highest spec game on any console last gen. Kid Icarus' hero, Pit, hasn't been seen since Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, released on the original Game Boy in 1991.

It was rumored a few years ago that Factor 5 were working on a Kid Icarus game for the GameCube, but after a couple of years and a Sony deal signed, the rumour died. Is this a resurrection of that project as a tie-in to Pit's appearance in Super Smash Bros Brawl?

In case this isn't true, I think Retro Studios would be ideal for a new Kid Icarus game as well. They transferred the feeling and gameplay of the original Metroid games to 3D really well and were quite spot on, so if Factor 5 aren't or won't be doing this, Retro Studios would be my second choice.

^ Agreed. Metroid and Kid Icarus on the NES used the same game engine so why not do the same here?

Even tho its only a rumor i can't stop feeling excited about this news seeing that i've always adored the Kid Icarus games. If it is true I hope Factor 5 delivers an awesome game and shows the industry why they are regarded as an awesome developer that make awesome titles for Nintendo(excluding Lair).

I'd also love to see them make a new rogue squadron game with online dog fights! Battle of Endor 16 v 16!!!!! Or i'd like to see them take over the Star Fox franchise.

After Lair, I can't help but wonder if they'll announce that the control scheme consists of holding a wiimote in each hand and flapping your arms up and down furiously to achieve flight.

(Actually, that might be kinda fun...)

Honestly, I'm a little wary of Factor 5 taking the helm of a new Kid Icarus project - but, aside from Retro, I can't think of a single dev that wouldn't make me wary with that kind of responsibility.

Man... Kid Icarus... dare I get excited? No. Dread will do for now.
