PES 2008 control scheme revealed

Wii News | Konami to 'make full use' of Wii's capabilities.
Monsters & Critics has a story up describing Konami's approach to controlling the Wii version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. Konami apparently intends to make 'full use of the hardware’s innovative control system'.

Gamers will use the Wii remote to control whoever has possession of the ball using a 'point and drag' system, with skill moves and the like being activated using hand gestures. The remote will also be used to select who will receive passes and 'make runs on to attacking through-balls', whatever that means. The remote can also be shaken to perform sliding tackles and to command the goalkeeper to remove balls from the penalty area. The D-pad will allow you to switch your tactical approach mid-game.

No mention is made of the Nunchuk.

PES 2008 will feature six modes of play, including match, league, cup, training and trade/transfer. Exclusive to the Wii is the Champions Road competition mode, 'which will see players given the opportunity to compete as their favourite team in various league tournaments around the footballing world'. This mode allows users to poach players from the teams they have defeated for use in their own team. Miis will be supported - including the option to have a full, 16-strong team of Miis - and mini-games will be included too. Wi-Fi and WiiConnect24 support will facilitate online play.

PES 2008 is set for a PAL release in March.

Sounds promising so let's hope they crack it. So far, ive been relatively unimpressed by attempts by third parties to establish a solid gesture based control system. Mortal Kombat Armageddon is a prime example. It's much more 'reliable' to play with the Classic Controller than it is with the Wii-Mote.

You may want to look at this old video demonstration for the new controls. It really does look like a great new way to play, certainly more touchside manager control. It should really be renamed Pro Revolution Soccer.

HOLY CRAP!

That is beyond amazing. Now this is the sort of stuff the Wii was made to encourage. How seemless and blended is that into the play?

Ill tell you know. I havent owned or played a soccer game since EA's FIFA back in Megadrive days and just from seeing what i've seen, ill certainly pick this one up!

Pro Revo is right! Thanks so much for that video post.
