Super Smash Bros. Brawl gets perfect score in Famitsu

Wii News | As we wait, for a date.
Australians may still be waiting for a solid release date for the recently delayed Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but this hasn't stopped our anticipation for the game reaching lofty heights.

The very first review for the game has surfaced and Japanese gaming bible Famitsu has given the game 40/40. Just to be clear, that's four 10/10 scores from four separate reviewers. Very few games have shared this honour, with the list including titles such as Nintendogs and Final Fantasy XII.

A perfect score from Famitsu is quite a big deal considering it's only the seventh game ever to do so.

From Wiki:

Only seven games so far have received perfect scores. They are listed in chronological order:

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, Nintendo, for Nintendo 64)
2. Soulcalibur (1999, Namco, for Dreamcast)
3. Vagrant Story (2000, Square Co., Ltd., for PlayStation)
4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003, Nintendo for Nintendo GameCube)
5. Nintendogs (2005, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)
6. Final Fantasy XII (2006, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2)
7. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008, Nintendo, for Wii)

Yeah good news, but I don't take much heart from Famitsu anymore. I mean Wind Waker, Nintendogs, FFXII aren't really 10/10 games.

Famitsu was never supposed to be taken seriously. It's more like a glossy PR magazine that a serious reviewer (by Western standards). Silly bowing out to public opinion must be strange to us eh.

But still can't ignore 40/40 for SSBs icon_smile.gif

Well I thought Windwaker was...

But still 10/10 for ssbb only means one thing, it got a better score than melee. And thats a good thing ^^

brawl may just live up to its hype

I don't get why this is so important. Even though only seven games have ever received a perfect score, it's a Japanese magazine, they don't generally have the same tastes as we do... I mean Japanese websites don't report when another place gives a game a perfect score.

that's because when we are in a position to review the games, they're already playing the next sequel...

I disagree - Famitsu is much better than other "serious reviewers" like IGN who basically put the person who would like the game most on the review. Obviously they shouldn't put someone who would dislike the game in the first place.... but the fact is that the score feels manufactured to please the publishers plus their reviews looks at most games very objectively rather than subjectively pointing out minor flaws even for 9.5 games and explaining why they didn't get a full 10.

HAHAHAHAHA,

If Soulcalibur and Nintendogs can get perfect 40/40 scores. Any game could.

Soul Calibur still holds firm against any fighter on the market today.

^ well i haven't played the first one on said Dreamcast, but play the 2nd one often, I agree with your point, and am in the mindset that Soul Calibur and Smash Bros are the top of the fighting genre 'ladder', both are great but for different reasons (ie. i see Soul Calibur as a great story and skill fighter; where as Smash is a great 'pick up and play', 'skill' and 'collaboration' of different universes into one healthy whole)

But now that Smash Bros Brawl has received a perfect score from Famitsu, has a more fleshed out story element to it, but still keeps all that was great before, i couldn't be happier and can see it topping even Soul Calibur in my eyes

I'm not sure if all that up there made sense, but in condensed form; I'm really glad that Smash Bros Brawl received a perfect score, and that all the waiting will pay off icon_smile.gif

Only Pilotwings 64 has ever deserved 40/40.

FACT.
