Nintendo to sponsor 2008 Australian Open

Wii News | Fancy a chance at challenging Mark Philippoussis?
Nintendo Australia recently made an announcement that they will be sponsoring the 2008 Australian Open, which will be taking place at Melbourne Park between January 14-27.

As part of their sponsorship, Nintendo will take on the title as Official Gaming Console Supplier, and will have a stand outside the Vodafone arena. The stand will feature demonstrations of Wii Sports, as well as a lounge where the public can try their hands… err eyes… at Sight Training.

In addition, every day of the Australian Open, visitors will be able to enter the Wii Championships competition at the Nintendo stand, which requires you to remain undefeated at Wii Tennis for as long as possible. The winning competitor of each day will receive a Wii console, while the two highest ranking contestants will be asked back for a final, which will take place in Garden Square. The final winner will not only receive tickets to the Men’s Final, but will also have a chance to play Wii Tennis against Mark Philippoussis.

In case you don't win the final, Mark Philippoussis will also be appearing at the Nintendo stand on Tuesday, January 15th at 11:00am. A Nintendo DS Lite with a copy of Sight Training will also be given away daily.

“Both the Wii Championships and Nintendo Sight Training Lounge at the Australian Open, will showcase the diversity and broad appeal of Nintendo’s products,” said Rose Lappin, the Managing Director of Nintendo Australia. “We have games for everyone. We know Mark Philippoussis is a fan of Wii, and there will be a few Wii fans lining up to take him on.”

The difference between the Wii marketing and the GameCube marketing is ridiculous. Although I guess it helps when you've got a product that people seem to actually want.

Hrmm. Bit of a conundrum.
Do people want the Wii more because of the marketing? As such, did people not want the Gamecube due to the marketing or lack there of? Meh.

Well, this is a good move. A good play? Is there a tennis pun I could have made there? I don't 'do' sport.

I would think Mark Philippoussis would be used to having his arse kicked.

Sounds like some great clean marketing if you ask me. Not even a hint of naked boobies.

Journo: "Well Mark, you've lost Age of Love, you've lost most hope in your Career, and now you've lost a game of Wii Tennis against a 5 Year old Boy with No arms. Your thoughts?"

Mark: "Ahh.....My......Knee. That's it, I've injured my knee during the game."

Journo: "You've been sitting down for the past 45 minutes."

Another smart advertising move for Nintendo, its good to see some variety as I am sick of seeing the same Wii Sports ads on the TV.
They need to start focusing more on other key software titles, I'm surprised that I haven't sene much on the Wii version of Brain Training yet. It makes no sense for them to continually dwell on Wii Sports. Sure, it seels etc but they cold sell much more software if they just marketed their other games a bit more.
