Metroid Dread still exists?

DS Rumour | Hint in Metroid Prime 3 suggests so.
A few years ago, a leaked Nintendo release schedule revealed a few otherwise unannounced games that were assumed to be in development, and slowly but surely, each game surfaced. However, there was one particular game that was never seen or heard from again. This title was simply known as Metroid Dread and was supposedly going to be a new 2D Metroid title for the Nintendo DS.

In the wake of Metroid Prime 3's release in the US, IGN have uncovered a log entry which appears to make a reference to the project. Located towards the end of the game, the log entry simply reads: "Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion." Could this mean the game still exists, or are Nintendo and Retro just having a bit of fun with the fans by referencing an old internet rumour?

Either way, the message's appearance will likely have Metroid fans eagerly searching for every log entry they can possible find in hopes of scanning it. Of course, this doesn't make things easier for PAL gamers who have to wait until October this year to experience what is being hailed as one of the Wii's best games.

A new 2D metroid game!?!! *drools*
I miss 2D games, well 2D gameplay games, I don't mind if they are rendered in 3D as long as the game plays in 2D, like Ikaruga or new super mario, they were awesome.

Just imagine, a new 2d Metroid. It's a good picture isn't it. I hope Retro isn't pulling our chain.

There was a new 2D Metroid released only three years ago, it's not so foreign a concept.

Great news. I've also just realised that MP3 reviews have started to surface.

Yeah, reviewers are humping this game hard.

Even if there wasnt one in the making, they just inadvertingly committed to making one now. Fans have influenced Metroid a lot recently, with the multiplayer in MP2 and the online in Hunters.

I think if Dread was really in the making we would have seen it at E3. The rumour is ancient and it should have been revealed by now.

Reguardless of Dreads existance, it's still a cool easter egg from the team at Retro to include.

You know, who's to say it will remain a 2D project. Maybe it'll be the next 3D Metroid title. Mind you, I'd like to see a 2D Metroid take advantage of both screens like the upcomming Chronos Twins.

Nah, 3D Metroids need to take a break. I want Retro to work on a completely new Wii project. And as you said dual screen Metroid would be nice.
