Nintendo DS peripheral details emerge

DS News | You'll be sliding your way to victory with this one, literally.
According to the latest issue of Famitsu, a new Nintendo DS game called Slide Adventure: Mag Kid will come bundled with a "slide controller" peripheral. Apparently, the peripheral goes into the Game Boy Advance slot of the DS console and acts a bit like a stand allowing you to place the handheld on a flat surface.

In the game, players will take control of Mag Kid, a strange creature who has special magnetic abilities which he uses to attach enemies to himself and gain their powers somewhat similar to how Kirby sucks and swallows his enemies. Using each enemy's powers, you will also have to solve an array of puzzles and defeat several bosses.

During gameplay, as players move the DS around on the surface, the device will track movement and move Mag Kid on screen accordingly. By sliding your DS forwards, Mag Kid will ram into enemies which will paralyse them and allow their powers to be yours. Once you tire of your newly accuried powers, a simple shake of the DS console will release them.

From what Famitsu have reported, it certainly sounds interesting but whether or not the peripheral becomes another ill-fated gimmick remains to be seen. The game is currently scheduled for a release in Japan on 2nd August this year, with a Western release still pending. We'll report back once new information becomes available.

As it requires a surface to rub the device on, I imagine that holding the DS at a level where you can slide it easily, and comfortably view the screens may be awkward.

Surely making a motion sensing cartridge giving it capabilities similar to its big brother would be a better solution to new control methods? The required sensors are very cheap and it would mean that you wouldn't need to worry about finding a clean flat surface to play on.

The only problem with that for a game like this is that it's a handheld. The fact that you have to hold it in your hands and the slightest movement of your hands would most likely set it off. It would just make it that more annoying to get things right and would most likely be quite frustrating.

It sounds like it'd be eqaully frustrating having to 'slide' your DS across a tabletop while keeping track of on-screen events (let alone trying to keep hand-cramps at bay).
Then there's the massive amount of scratching the backside of your DS would suffer.

Hmmpf, pass.

Also, how would it work with the different sizes of the regular DS and the DS Lite?

I don't think it would work, for when if you play in the car or you can't find an actual flat surface.

it sounds good on paper, but i agree that scratching up the DS and the fact that its not all that portable if you need a flat surface makes a bit hard, i wont pass judgment yet though, i need to at least see it

sounds terrible. first of all, its turning the PORTABLE device into one that needs to stay on a flat surface, removing the point of having a DS in the first place and secondly, like many others have said, how would you see the screens? Controlling it sounds awkward. I understand that people are desperate to find the next new thing but this isn't it (unless its not what we're expecting at all)

That sounds like a neat idea, but as others have pointed out, very impractical.

Problem with using a tilt sensor instead is, mercury switches are the cheapest route, which causes problems here in Europe. Hence why Wario Ware: Twisted! is never going to arrive here. Though I think this game would really benefit from that instead of some crazy mouse track ball gimmick.

Who knows maybe it'll work. I've certainly used the DS on a flat surface before.

Are there any pictures of this peripheral anywhere?

The magazine itself would probably have images.

Oooooohhhhh... the peripheral itself provides a 'stand' so you don't have to worry about damaging your shiney little DS! Clever!

Well, I still think that it'd be a bit akward to play... but I'm more interested in the game now knowing that I wouldn't ruin my DS playing it icon_smile.gif
