Slidatron: Dual Space Preview

DS Preview | We take a first look at the Australian developed title.
Normally when we get a chance to go hands on with a title it's with a publisher tying to sell their title. Generally we've received quite a bit of information about a game by this point and a rough release date is in place. At the Ballarat GIG we recently had an opportunity to go hands on with Slidatron: Dual Space, an innovative DS title from Melbourne-based developers Endgame Studios. Slidatron: Dual Space hasn't got a publisher yet, but after going hands-on with the game we think the title uses the Nintendo DS in one of the most innovative ways we've seen yet.

Slidatron puts you in control of Earnest Featherbottom. The unique hook for Slidatron is the fact that you're actually playing on both screens at the same time. You may begin on the top screen but you can change what screen is active by using your Slidatron to change dimensions. Activating your Slidatron is as easy as pressing one of the shoulder buttons on the Nintendo DS. It's rather easy to tell what screen is active as Earnest will be coloured in the active screen. By spreading the action over two screens Endgame have incorporated a few puzzles. If you need to jump up to a higher area you'll need to climb on a step, if there is no step in the active screen then you'll need to flick the action to the alternate world and climb up the steps, navigating between screens is seamless and becomes second nature after only a few minutes.

Looking very impressive.

Earnest isn't alone in his adventures. You'll come across a range of enemies and you can use Earnest's giant mallet to defeat the enemies. Scattered throughout the levels will also be a range of spanners. Just navigating through a level won't be good enough to collect these spanners, you'll need to actually switch between screens or come back to the earlier levels once you've mastered switching between screens a little better to collect all of the spanners.

Endgame also plans to add a multiplayer component to Slidatron. You'll be able to team up with friends wirelessly across both screens in the cooperative mode. Unfortunately we weren't able to see the cooperative mode in action but the idea of teaming up with a friend in cooperative mode is always something we endorse.

Whilst our hands-on with Slidatron: Dual Space was remarkably brief we came away rather impressed. For a game that still has months of development time ahead of it we're excited about the potential the game presents. Playing on both screens of the Nintendo DS simultaneously works surprisingly well and we cannot wait to get our hands on with the game again. Australian developed IP's are about as rare as hen's teeth, but Endgame are really onto a winner with Slidatron: Dual Space.
Overall:
Slidatron: Dual Space uses the Nintendo DS in an innovative way. It's Australian developed, a new IP and is so far, extremely enjoyable.

Seems pretty cool, despite the cutesy look. I can see how that game mechanic might work really well.

the character looks to be a cross between Baxter Stockman from Ninja Turtles and Jimmy the cripple from south park.

This concept seems similar to that used in the playstation soul reaver. It makes for some dynamic puzzles (beyond crate pushing) but somehow I dont see Earnest having quite the same appeal as Kain

I don't like the stereotypes (laser gun, Featherbottom...haha so funny) but it seems like Contact (the forgotten game), with action happeneing on both screens.

I hate to dredge up an old catchphrase (I love it), but "Please Explain?"
Seriously, draw it out in red crayon or something but I fail to see the parallel between this and Contact.
