The build on hand allows players to access the game’s multiplayer mode, which was first revealed at E3 2006. The demo showcased at GDC enables players to hook up with another person, and once connected, battle it out in this unique multiplayer mode.
In this two-player multiplayer mode, entitled ‘battle mode’, one player will control Link and the other will control three enemies in a small arena. The goal for the person playing as Link is to pickup as many Triforce shards as humanly possibly and secure them at their coloured base. Meanwhile, the other person playing as the enemy will have to capture Link, resulting in an end of turn and the players swapping characters.
There’s a bit of strategy involved in this mode though. The person playing as the enemy characters will have to trace a path out on the touch-screen to guide where they want each of their three guards to go. This can be used to trap Link, and eventually corner him if your strategy plays out correctly. Additionally, when Link picks up a Triforce shard it’ll slow his running speed down, depending on the size of the shard he picks up. Smaller shards are worth fewer points; meanwhile larger ones are worth more.
The arenas are structured much like a Pac-Man game, where there will be tunnels that Link can run through to access the opposite side of the map with relative ease. There are a handful of items to pickup too, with certain items increasing run speed or offering limited invisibility.
Nintendo didn’t disclose whether or not the mode would be available via online.
To accommodate this latest demo, Nintendo has also released a handful of new screenshots from the single and multiplayer modes, which can be found in our Media Panel to the right.
