Elite Beat Agents tracklist revealed

DS News | Elite? Or a One Night Carnival?
Gaming Blog GameLife Game|Life has apparently revealed the full track listing for Elite Beat Agents, the upcoming English version of the brilliant Japanese rhythm game Ouendan. They also spoke to the game's designer Keiichi Yano about the thought process behind the song selection.

"The concept for song selection was this - the roaring songs you would want to hear if you went to a college frat party, I used to play in bands like that, and when the whole crowd is jumping up and down to your tunes...this is the essence of our selections," said Yano. "Also what is really important is the balance of the game as a whole. We try not to pick songs just because we want it in there. We were staring at the entire list the whole time while making our selections. Oldies but goodies, great new songs, and a wide array of genres are all criteria for song selection and we take all of these into account all the time. Also there are obviously songs that are just rhythmically fun to play!" (Check out the full article for some more quotes from Yano).

It's lucky some explanation was given, because some of the announced songs may need it. We suggest you hold your breath while reading through this lot:
  • Walkie Talkie Man - Steriogram
  • ABC - Jackson Five
  • Sk8er Boi - Avril Lavigne
  • I Was Born to Love You - Queen
  • Rock This Town - Stray Cats
  • Highway Star - Deep Purple
  • Y.M.C.A. - Village People
  • September - Earth, Wind and Fire
  • Canned Heat - Jamiroquai
  • Material Girl - Madonna
  • La La - Ashlee Simpson
  • You're the Inspiration - Chicago
  • Survivor - Destiny's Child
  • Without a Fight - Hoobastank
  • Believe - Cher
  • Let's Dance - David Bowie
  • Jumpin Jack Flash - Rolling Stones
  • Makes No Difference - Sum 41
  • The Anthem - Good Charlotte
We'd have to say the inclusion of flavour-of-the-moment corporate creations like Avril and Ashlee is potentially disappointing, but many songs in Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! were totally re-jigged from the original version, so we'll have to see (hear?) the final game before we pass judgment. What are your thoughts on the track listing? Comment in our forums!

Totally... what a complete pile of garbage that track-listing is. I can't believe that anyone would think those examples of aural excrement would actually entice someone to the game!

Import here I come!

It's got a Jamiroquai track in it, the only thing better would be a completely Jamiroquai sound track.

I find it quite amusing that people bash this for music choices and then say they want to get Ouendan, which, as far as I can tell, has a fairly similar selection of music, albeit in Japanese.

Ignorance of what the lyrics are actually saying for the win?

Lets just say, I know a fair chunk of that line up sucks, atleast Ouendan will surprise me...

Not bad. Far from great, but not bad. It's the sort of stuff that should sell, that's the important thing for this kind of game. I can't see it being as good as Ouendan because of this but it should still be a must buy I'm sure.

Ouendan had 9 rock songs, 2 rap songs, one old cabaret number (remixed) and 2 pop songs. The pop songs (Over the Distance and the Morning Museme song) were designed in context to be emotional and silly respectively. They reminded me of a Casey Chambers type singer and the Spice Girls, either of which I would have been happy with here.

This EBA list has at least 7 songs that could be called pop, that's the main difference to me. Even some of the 'rock' stuff is more pop-rock (like the tepid Singstar Rocks). There are some good selections here - almost all of the older stuff is good - but Avril Lavigne and Ashlee Simpson are a disgraceful choices IMO. I'm not too happy about Good Charlotte, Cher, Madonna and Sum 41 either.

The rest is ok. Hopefully they 'fix' the crap songs when they record the covers.

Yeah, I'll concede that point - the older stuff is fine. But Lavigne, Simpson, etc. etc. is more than enough to make me never part with money for this. And I was looking forward to a fully localised version, too.

Marks out of 10 -> 0. That track list is a total joke. Most of that music is offensive and goes against what made the Japanese game so great.

I kinda like maybe 7 of those songs, and actively dislike many of the rest. Disappointing!

The only way they could get away with this is having it really fit with the stories. I guess that's not too hard, but I don't think I can hang up my dislike of Hoobastank and @vr1l l3v1gn3 icon_sad.gif

I just hope that they're the original artists, not like in the DK Bongo game on the Cube - then I'll be impressed, because that line up, despite what this very small group thinks, will be a great selling point for Nintendo.

I'm glad I have the Japanese version. The tunes are just so unique to a Western ear and don't have the connotations of the commercial releases on EBA, eventhough they almost certainly do for Japanese players.

Rinda Rinda!!

There's actually a lot of really good songs on there, I'll admit that Avril Lavigne is a bit lax in the songwriting credentials but stuff like Queen, Madonna, Rolling Stones and others are all really talented artists that have songs that do exactly what the developers want, when they go on at a party or a pub everyone goes nuts.

Alright then, my mistake - I was under the impression that Ouendan was a pretty much 50/50 split of J-Rock and J-Pop.
