Star Fox DS named and dated

DS News | And it's coming sooner than you think...
We only learned of Star Fox DS' existence two weeks ago at E3, but we've received news today that it's so close we can taste it. Hoping to erase all memory of Rare and Namco's mediocre efforts with the series, Nintendo will be releasing Star Fox Command in the US on August 28. No PAL release dates yet, but we'll keep you informed of that.

In Star Fox Command, you will once again take on the role of Fox McCloud and his team. The game makes a lot of use of the DS touch screen, and actually combines uses we've seen from such varying games as Nintendogs and Metroid Prime Hunters. When you begin a mission, you must plot a course for your ship on a map of the space between you and your destination, much like plotting a walk for your puppy in Nintedogs. There are varying obstacles that you must decide between when you plot the course, such as enemy bases and asteroid belts, and - far from feeling tacked on - the feature seems like the full expression of the multiple paths Star Fox games have offered since the SNES original. The Metroid-esque controls come into play in the action itself - Fox's ship is controlled with a combination of the D-pad and touch screen for movement, where the touch screen is used for aiming your shots manually.

Check back with PALGN for more updates on Star Fox Command, including PAL release dates when we get them.

First off:

YAY for Star Fox Command.

Secondly:

BOO for this:

The Metroid-esque controls come into play in the action itself - Fox's ship is controlled with a combination of the D-pad and touch screen for movement, where the touch screen is used for aiming your shots manually.

Personally, wasn't the biggest fan of the control in Hunters. -_- Ah well, will still pick this up. The planning-your-route-out-first bit sounds good.

^^I dunno why everyone's down on Hunters control - Playing Mario Kart DS and Ridge Racer (on PSP) hurt my hand much more then Hunters did (mainly because of the placement of the buttons you have to hold down all the time in those racing games).

I agree David. I don't know why there was no option to change controls..

Awesome, can't wait for this game. I personally like the Hunters method of control, takes a little to get used to, but change the sensitivity a bit and it works brilliantly icon_smile.gif

Metroid Hunters' controls imitate a mouse really well, and since everyone says the mouse is the best controller for FPSs I can't see how its a problem. It did take a while to learn, but, hell, that shouldn't be a problem since we all would have learnt it by then.

The game itself sounds quite good, too.

1. I don't like flying games
2. The characters in the game are some of the worst conceived by Nintendo
3. ... hey! why am i explaining myself? icon_razz.gif

Hunters didn’t replica a mouse and keyboard method at all. Due to the layout your hands are closed up, and with the Hunter’s control method, you have to juggle your fingers from button to button, which I personally thought defeated the purpose of how the Metroid series is suppose to be a fast paced game. I eventually just ended up using the non-touch screen method since it didn’t hurt my hands as much.

Overall, though, the DS design is very ‘big-hand’ friendly. I’ve got very long fingers (bass player fingers) and cramping my fingers inwards for the awkward DS design didn’t help.

Yay for Star Fox! Boo for Hunter-like controls!

A blog entry from Matt Casamassina at IGN really sums up the problems with the first person shooter control system currently being used for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on the Nintendo Wii.

Actually, come to think of it, this control setup described in the blog entry resembles or mimics the one used in Metroid Prime: Hunters.

I fully understand the problem described there.

Why not change the system where instead of the whole screen being one 'aimbox', where if you get to the edge of the screen it starts to move, why not change it so the aimbox is like a 3cmx3cm small aimbox in the very centre of the screen, that would compensate for 'shaky hands'(you'd have to have might shaky hands to make the screen shake with a 3cmx3cm buffer) but at the same time a box that small would not make turning and looking around laggy either.
