E3 2006: Diddy Kong Racing DS revealed

DS News | Rare's first DS game! Screen inside.
Diddy Kong Racing DShas been revealed on Nintendo's press site, and while many people are very interested in the game, there's little to no info on it at the moment - except that Rare are developing it - but we have managed to snare a screen. At first glance, it appears to be a straight port of the N64 classic - the screen shown is a track in the original game. But since Microsoft now owns Rare, it's likely Banjo and Conker will be cut from the game's roster of characters. Nintendo owns all the Donkey Kong related characters though, so most of the roster will probably remain (we’ve already seen Dixie Kong, for example).

There's also a video floating around, which we'll bring you that if we can manage to get a decent version of it. In the meantime, check out this, er, single screen in the media panel.

Well if you wanted confirmation that Rare is doing it, you could always look at their site:

E3 '06 is also the debut stage for our latest collaboration with Nintendo: we've possibly hinted at it in the past, but then again we've also hinted at a lot of other things, because we're like that. Yes, Diddy Kong Racing is our first official DS project, and Nintendo are busily promoting it as part of their next wave of big DS offerings for late 2006. Based on the N64 classic but improved and expanded in ways that only the DS allows, you can see the first shot and movie snippet over on NCL's website if you haven't already.

Er, I can't see any screenshot...

How is this possible since Microsoft owns Rare?

Yeah I don't get it either. Is it because Nintendo own the right to the code or something?

Microsoft have no entry in the Handheld gaming market, remember. It's a free market for them.

Thats Tiny Kong, not Dixie Kong, isn't it?

RARE own the rights to Diddy Kong Racing, thus they're free to port it over to the DS.
It's a bit more complicated than that.

Rare might own the rights to some of the characters in the game, but Nintendo owns Diddy Kong.

Microsoft doesn't have a competing console in the handheld market, so they have given their studios permission to create games for the GBA and DS because it's extra revenue. Microsoft don't publish those games, usually either Nintendo will do it directly or a 3rd party like THQ will publish them instead.

interesting but Mario Kart will suffice. Although adventure mode on N64 was good..

Looks good, I liked the original, and the screenshot is nice looking. A rare game for DS is definitely a good thing.

Easily one of my biggest surprises from Nintendo's conference and easily one of my most anticipated DS titles. Should be awesome. icon_biggrin.gif

Sounds good, but like the_cro said, Mario Kart is enough for me. I need to save money for the many other great DS games soon coming out.

Did you guys notice that the map on the bottom screen is upside down, compared to Mario Kart DS. Have a close look.
