E3 2006: The DS gets a new Mega Man game

DS News | The first batch of screenshots, as well as a heap of details, available inside.
Capcom has been extremely busy during the last few days, taking the wraps off a seemingly endless stream of games. Mega Man ZX is one such game in the stream, coming to the Nintendo DS (not the ZX Spectrum) later this year. Apparently, you will have the choice of being male or female - Mega Woman? Hmm. Well, not quite. The male character will be known as Vent, and the female as Aile.

The story - as if a Mega Man game needs one - takes place some time after the battles between the humans and reploids. After finally all sitting down for a cup of coffee, the two sides came to terms, making the 'Inner' universe friendly for everyone. Unfortunately, the - you guessed it - 'Outer' section is home to the Mavericks - evolved robots who like to wreck stuff. Thankfully, the Sergeant Company is around to protect the Inner from the Outer, as well as search for various things of interest - technology and energy, mainly. One fateful day, they discover some ancient technology remains, known as Biometals. These are apparently self-aware, and act as a database of sorts for all kinds of ancient information.

Still with us? Good. This is where Vent and Aile come in. As part of a universe-wide courier company, Girouette Express, they find themselves transporting Z and X Biometels (hence the title, see?), when, of course, they come under siege from Mavericks who are after their cargo. During the battle, your character of choice absorbs the X biometal, while your boss, Girouette, absorbs the Z biometal. Your character and Girouette then combine their powers to become Model ZX, destroyer of all things Maverick. Cripes.

From there, the game follows the usual Mega Man formula. You must beat the Maverick bosses to take their Biometals, in order to use their powers against other Maverick bosses and to progress into previously inaccessible areas. However, there seem to be a few twists. Players can remain in human form, allowing them to talk with local townsfolk, as well as undertake various side quests. The bottom of the screen will also display information such as the bosses weakpoint, hidden items in the area, and so on. Shame this isn't depicted in our the first screenshots, though.

This one is set for a Q3 release in North America - hopefully to land in PAL regions soon after.

Well, it sounds pretty cool, not really interested in any story so long as we have some really hard and frantic levels I'll be happy.
