All of the screens focus on the action, rather than having any showing more of the power-up screens, because honestly, who wants to see that? There is a definite feel of nostalgia when gazing upon these images as you can clearly see levels themed on old Super Mario Bros. titles, with the action taking place in a desert, underwater and underground.
Shigeru Miyamoto has also just revealed some tidbits about New Super Mario Bros. in an interview with Nintendo of Europe. Apparently, the mini-games included in Super Mario 64 DS will be incorporated into New Super Mario Bros. with a two-player and four-player single-cart multiplayer feature added in for some of the mini-games. And we were also informed that New Super Mario Bros. will have a structure similar to that of Super Mario Bros. 3 (i.e.: worlds, levels, bosses and fortresses).
Shiggy had this to say about the New Super Mario Bros. project: "Well, there will be many people who play New Super Mario Bros. that have never played a Mario Bros. game before. But at the same time we want to evoke a kind of nostalgic feeling in those people who used to play with the past series, so we are now trying to incorporate as many old tricks and tweaks as possible into this new DS version." He also indirectly elaborated that these tweaks and tricks are things like warp pipes and running along the top of the screen (in the game, of course).
Miyamoto also mentions, in regards to story; "I told them that we really don’t need any story behind this new Super Mario Bros. at all. I have narrowed down the whole story to about half of what my team originally came up with. Peach is kidnapped, Mario has to go and rescue her from Bowser and the Koopa Kids. That’s about all you need to know for the story!"
So with that information and those screenshots you’re probably wondering when this game is coming out? Well, Nintendo of Australia has just updated their charts with a June 8 release date shown for New Super Mario Bros. (thanks to forum members for the heads up on that), but no dice for Europe just yet. Stay tuned as PALGN brings you more coverage of New Super Mario Bros. over the coming weeks.
