This new Mario adventure mixes 3D and 2D world elements to add a little more detail to the worlds. The adventure is primarily in 2D but some 3D elements will pop up every now and then. The bottom screen on the Nintendo DS will be reserved for storing items and using them quickly in game. Most of the important action happens on the top of the screen although at times Mario will go underground and when this happens the action quickly focuses on the bottom screen.

Mario himself has a lot more moves than most people will be used to and a lot of them come from his 3D adventures. It’s possible to butt-stomp, triangle jump off walls and backflip. There is a lot of power-ups in the game as well and you’ll need to utilise them fully to complete certain parts of the game. One of the power-ups is a mushroom that turns you into giant Mario. One of the first screens we ever saw of the game actually showed what Mario would look like when he was super-sized and when playing as a giant Mario you can crush your enemies as well as take on large enemies, although the power-up is only a temporary thing so you’ll need to do everything quickly before you shrink down.
Even though we’ve known about the game for nearly two years now, Nintendo have released information very sparingly. All we know about the level design so far is that there is a forest level, a desert level and a fortress level. There has been no mention yet of how many levels the final game will have, but we expect there will be plenty of content in the game. It’s likely that all the enemies from the previous 2D adventure will make an appearance as well, simply because Nintendo appears to be sticking very closely to the content of the earlier other 2D adventure games.
The final game will also incorporate a wireless multiplayer mode. In this mode one player takes control of Mario and the other plays as Luigi. The objective is just to get through the level the fastest, but there will be power-ups scattered throughout the levels such as lightning bolts, which shrink your opponent. Nintendo haven’t revealed whether there will be other bonuses in the game or any other multiplayer modes but it’s likely they are still keeping a few things secret.

It's really amazing that we can know about a game for two years and barely know anything about the title, but that is what Nintendo is best at. It seems like New Super Mario Bros. is going to be more of the same; sure it’s going to be a whole new 2D adventure but will it feel all that different? We’ll know for sure in just over two months. Stay tuned to PALGN for extensive coverage of New Super Mario Bros. in the coming weeks. A PAL date for the game will be announced soon and we’ll report back as soon as we know anything.
