New Super Mario Bros. Preview

DS Preview | We take a close look at Mario's new adventure.
There is no doubting that New Super Mario Bros. is going to be big, It’s the first time that there has been a new 2D Mario adventure since the critically acclaimed Super Mario World. We’ve had to play through our fair share of rehashes on the Gameboy Advance and finally Nintendo are rewarding our patience with a new adventure. We thought we’d take a look and see if Mario has still got it. First impressions are good and this could well be the game to rekindle 2D gaming.

This new Mario adventure mixes 3D and 2D world elements to add a little more detail to the worlds. The adventure is primarily in 2D but some 3D elements will pop up every now and then. The bottom screen on the Nintendo DS will be reserved for storing items and using them quickly in game. Most of the important action happens on the top of the screen although at times Mario will go underground and when this happens the action quickly focuses on the bottom screen.

Mario himself has a lot more moves than most people will be used to and a lot of them come from his 3D adventures. It’s possible to butt-stomp, triangle jump off walls and backflip. There is a lot of power-ups in the game as well and you’ll need to utilise them fully to complete certain parts of the game. One of the power-ups is a mushroom that turns you into giant Mario. One of the first screens we ever saw of the game actually showed what Mario would look like when he was super-sized and when playing as a giant Mario you can crush your enemies as well as take on large enemies, although the power-up is only a temporary thing so you’ll need to do everything quickly before you shrink down.

Even though we’ve known about the game for nearly two years now, Nintendo have released information very sparingly. All we know about the level design so far is that there is a forest level, a desert level and a fortress level. There has been no mention yet of how many levels the final game will have, but we expect there will be plenty of content in the game. It’s likely that all the enemies from the previous 2D adventure will make an appearance as well, simply because Nintendo appears to be sticking very closely to the content of the earlier other 2D adventure games.

The final game will also incorporate a wireless multiplayer mode. In this mode one player takes control of Mario and the other plays as Luigi. The objective is just to get through the level the fastest, but there will be power-ups scattered throughout the levels such as lightning bolts, which shrink your opponent. Nintendo haven’t revealed whether there will be other bonuses in the game or any other multiplayer modes but it’s likely they are still keeping a few things secret.

It's really amazing that we can know about a game for two years and barely know anything about the title, but that is what Nintendo is best at. It seems like New Super Mario Bros. is going to be more of the same; sure it’s going to be a whole new 2D adventure but will it feel all that different? We’ll know for sure in just over two months. Stay tuned to PALGN for extensive coverage of New Super Mario Bros. in the coming weeks. A PAL date for the game will be announced soon and we’ll report back as soon as we know anything.
Overall:
New Super Mario Bros. is bound to be one of the Nintendo DS titles of the year. We hope Nintendo don't play it too safe though and take a few risks so the levels don't feel too familiar.

I kind of hope it doesn't. Sure change is good, but too much change can be a bad thing.

I'm just hoping Nintendo make some changes, i don't want to play a game that feels like more of a remake rather than a new game..

Who cares! It's a Mario game in 2D! icon_biggrin.gif So I want it, regardless.
Now where's that DS Lite/New SMB combo pack for launch, Nintendo?

Indeed, I want to see this idea happen and I want it to happen soon. I want my DS already. The future is bright for this handheld, there are already so many decent titles either available or coming soon and this is only the beginning. icon_biggrin.gif

As for the game in question, well there's isn't much to say due to the lack of information but damn will it be special.

2D game play with 3D style graphics? Let's hope this doesn't screw up like Mario vs Donkey Kong (GBA).

Note: Anyone who hasn't played original DK on NES & GB will not notice the screw up of Mario vs Donkey Kong.

My only concern is length. I hope it isn't a 5 hour title. But, not doubt this game will bring a lot to the table in terms of a 2D Mario, it's been to long!

Isn't it funny how Sonic has gone all weird and lackluster, but when a new Mario game comes out we all still go nuts.

I really can't wait for this. All we've been able to do is to play through remakes of old Mario games in portable form. While that has been lots of fun, it's not the same as having a new Mario game.

Bring it on!!

The only possible problem I can see is that it looks like it will be closer to SMB than SMB3/SMW, which are better, IMO.

But who cares? SMB is still alot better than most games out there.

^ Agreed, I still think Super Mario Bro is the best one out of all of them.
Still trying to get spare cash to get that on GBA so I can play it on the Micro (Stupid no playing GBC etc games)

this is one of the few games (that i know about) that's got me excited.

why doesn't SMW2: Yoshi's Island count in your "hasn't been a 2d mario since..." line?

I want it to play like Super Mario World. That was my fave. I hope it brings something new to the table.

I think its the 3d Mario & Luigi that puts me off.

Yoshi's Island is hard to classify, though. Its not exactly a Mario platformer, but its alot better than the other Yoshi games, and putting it in the same category as something like Yoshi's Universal Gravitation is an insult to it. However, it did have a playable Mario and was a 2D platformer, so I suppose it is a 2D Mario Platformer.

Oh, its all too confusing. Lets just say that if New SMB is even half as good as Yoshi's Island, it will be spectacular.

Yoshi's Island is a 2D mario game, because it is a 2D platformer with 'Super Mario' in the title. Even the Japanese name was "Super mario: Yossi Island". No other Yoshi games have 'Super Mario' in the title.

So yes, this is the sixth cannonical '2D Super Mario' platformer. It's also the fourth cannonical 'Super Mario Bros' game, and the eigth cannonical "Super Mario" game (including the two 3D games).

Keep in mind that it does seem to be a re-imagining of Mario 1 though, seemingly very close to the original game's basic gameplay, rather then the quite diverse sequels.

Super Mario Bros: Zero Mission

^^Sort of - Zero Mission added heaps of stuff from the sequels back into the oiginal story. I think NSMB will be an extension of the original game's gameplay without all the 'baggage' from the sequels.

True. But I still stand by my statement that its not exactly a 2D Mario platformer, hence why it was said in the article that there hasn't been a 2D Mario platformer since Super Mario World.

Also, where the GB games called Super Mario Land or just Mario Land? I'm curious.
Umm... so you don't consdier "Super Mario 64" and "Super Mario Sunshine" to be installments in the "Super Mario" platforming series then?
Just because they're in 3D, doesn't mean that they're not part of the core series, which would make this number 8...

But who gives a flying you know what anyway, hmm?

I found some interesting magazine extracts which I will now put links to:

http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos/30261020051102_125421_0_big.jpg

Now, this first one shows us some stuff we already know about, but it also shows us some sort of volcanic level that we haven't seen before.

http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos/30261020051102_125422_1_big.jpg

This second one has me interested because it shows how cool the underwater levels will look.
Also, it seems to show Mario using a blue shell as a powerup!

And finally... the big one...

http://img143.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc281?=11997_10190_nsmb.jpg

This one has psyched me up for the game quite a lot.
We have snow levels, cave levels, water levels, mushroom levels, grassy levels, desert levels, and so on.
We have all of the original enemies from "Super Mario Bros." - goombas, cheep cheeps, buzzy beetles, hammer bros., and so on.
There are even enemies from the later games, like bob-ombs.

That's not all - if you look at the bottom left-hand screenshot on this two-page spread, what do you see?
That's right, it's the very first screen of the original "Super Mario Bros.".

And then there's this little interview:

http://www.n-sider.com/newsview.php?type=story&storyid=1792

It seems that the game will largely be based on the original "Super Mario Bros." but will incorporate enemies, moves and powerups from later games, as well as a bunch of new stuff - pretty cool!

Yeah, I think this game is going to be mad!

And DIU, they were "Super Mario Land", but they were made by a different team to that which worked on the core series, so they're really more part of the "Wario Land" saga than anything else in my books.

Makes sense.

It is looking very nice, though I'm not sure when the Mario series went "hardcore" exactly. Still, its looking very cool.

Did we play the same game? I thought MvsDK had nice graphics - kinda like Super Mario RPG on the SNES.

Dunno how many people have seen this article

http://www.cgonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=345&Itemid=1

It says that NSMB will take place after SMB3, timeline-wise, and will include the Koopalings (Bowser's children for those who didn't play SMB3*cough* insane *cough*), and apparently the 2 player mode will be severely lacking compared to the single player.

On another note, I liked MvsDK :/
OK, that article is interesting, but what about "Super Mario World"?
That had Koopalings in it, and as far as I could tell, that was in essence "Super Mario Bros. 4" but on the SNES...
Nooooo! No Yoshi?! This is a disgrace! What is a Mario game without Yoshi!?

Sad day for me..icon_sad.gif

Don't worry, Mario 64 and SMB3 had no yoshi and they are arguably the best mario platformers ever.

This is my most wanted game atm (only becuase of the TP delay though).
Heh - "mario time-line". Thats gotta be any oxymoron.

The Koopalings are awesome. Good to see they are coming back once again.
