Release date revealed for New Super Mario Bros.

DS News | Plus: massive marble elimination!
New Super Mario Bros., the first 2D Mario platformer in, ooh, absolutely ages, has been pencilled in for a May 7th release in the US. The announcement came from Nintendo earlier today, and we'd imagine a PAL date surely can't be too far behind. The DS platformer uses snazzy 3D models in 2D environments, and is the first Mario platform adventure to hit the DS.

It'll also be the first ever side-scrolling Mario game to come with simultaneous multiplayer action, and a slew of nostalgic nods to previous Mario games is promised, with hidden blocks containing 1UP mushrooms, flagpoles, goombas, piranha plants and cheep cheeps all making an appearance. Heck, we're so excited we even added some screenshots for you. Not as excited as this chap, however.

Alongside this, Nintendo has also announced Magnetica, a puzzler in which "marbles roll down a twisted path toward the goal and it's up to players to stop them by launching new marbles into the oncoming ones. The marbles will disappear if players match three or more in this massive marble elimination." Nice. What's more, with a June 5th release date in the US and E3 2006 approaching fast, it shouldn't be too long before we get a closer look at both games.

Good stuff... the marble puzzle game sounds like my kind of thing too.

By the way, the link to the excited chap is not working.

Wrong. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the GBC had a two-player simulataneous race-mode-thingy, although I never got to use it as I never met anyone else with the game.

Good point Tootie, I owned that game at one point, and I never did get to use that mode either!

I did, it was alright, just a race. Like how you race the ghost in the game. Nothing really special.

I guess so, but there it is proof! So it's not the first time it's been done, but this one will be way better!

Holy fark, that video was intense... and I really doubt that was staged. If it was, that kid deserves an emmy.

I found it pretty good.

Whenever you hit a certain block, a whole bunch of blocks got in your opponent's way, so there are some tactics to when and where you move. Knowing the levels helps too (like mos games). It was really fun for two Mario 1 veterans.

GOOD OLD GAMEPLAY, 2D style. Its rare that a modern game can keep me playing for ages and ages. But Im sure this game will.

Rogue IMO.

Like I said in the other thread I get a more SMB vibe from that footage rather then then SMB3 or SMW.

I hope I'm wrong... the level design in SMW and to another extent Yoshi's Island was fantastic.

I only enjoy the original Mario Bros.
