The standard Tetris gameplay that has made the title a worldwide hit takes up the spot of mode one, but it comes with the Nintendo twist. As you are clearing lines on the lower screen, the top screen sees Mario playing around a Super Mario Bros-like level. Although many of you may have already drawn this conclusion from the previously released screenshots, it’s nice to get some confirmation.
The second mode, called "Touch," utilizes the DS's touch screen abilities for a unique form of Tetrimino deployment. With stylus in hand, you have the ability to drag, place and spin a Tetrimino. Unlike regular Tetris, “Touch” mode does not play in realtime, which gives you all the time in the world to make your move. Nintendo has not made it clear whether or not the new screens are from the “Touch” mode,
Each mode is themed on a famous Nintendo character or game, and from the new screens, one of the new themes will be Balloon Fight. In a few of the screenshots you can clearly see a crate of balloons acting as a Tetrimino, how or if this will affect gameplay is still unclear.
Tetris DS is on track for a March 20th release in America, still no word on a release anywhere else yet.
