Online is good!

DS News | So say half a million DS owners.
The number of connections to Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection online service has topped three million worldwide, according to the Nintendo’s UK general manager David Yarnton. It's estimated that this represents just over half a million DS players. Wi-Fi Connection, which is currently used by Nintendo DS titles was launched with the Mario Kart DS late last year and has been available to play both at home in wireless networks and at public hot-spots in Nintendo's partner network.

This service now has over three million players online, according to Yarnton, continuing what was considered a phenomenal success when Mario Kart DS was launched worldwide last November. Indications were that almost 50% of US purchasers of Mario Kart DS used the online service in the first week. It was expected that the numbers would have been boosted significantly when Animal Crossing: Wild World launched in December in Japan, North America and Australia. It managed to sell over a million units in Japan alone in its first fortnight on sale.

Yarnton also revealed that a thousand new hot spots are to be equipped in the UK for DS use in the coming months. The event that he was speaking at was held to promote key forthcoming Nintendo DS titles including Electroplankton and the European version of the hugely successful Brain Training titles. This is strong indication that the PAL territories will finally be getting a chance to see for themselves some of the more unique reasons to own a DS and why the Japanese have been going crazy over them.

I don't quite understand the numbers here...

3 Million connections and half a million DS players, I can understand, as it would just assume that there have been half a million DS players with 6 games each...but even that sounds a little odd now I am typing it.

The bit that really gets me, is that you have said 3 million players are online, yet only half a million of them are DS players.

What else does Nintendo WiFi Connection service?

Three million. What a figure. Still, as Xamerkapsy did say, all those different numbers were a bit confusing.

500k unique users, averaging 6 connections apiece.

Only confusing thing is other sites picking this up as "3M DS online users!".

Now is 6 connections per user good? I'd imagine that should rise to 100 apiece after a few years...

Edit; Or maybe not. It does go on to say 3M online users later in the article...which IMO is clearly not feasible on the DS userbase.

Edit 2; Yeah, it should be 500k unique users, because they announced 200k a month ago: http://www.nintendospin.com/article1402.html

And the closest I've gotten to going online was at EB today. Hey, maybe those demo units are thrown in for some stupid calculations, too.

With 500k unique DS consoles online, does that mean that there are atleast 6 online games, or DS owners who go online have on average 6 online titles?

Or is it saying that with 3million connections, DS owners have on average gone online 6 times?

Does PalGN have the original press release so we can see what that says maybe?
