This service now has over three million players online, according to Yarnton, continuing what was considered a phenomenal success when Mario Kart DS was launched worldwide last November. Indications were that almost 50% of US purchasers of Mario Kart DS used the online service in the first week. It was expected that the numbers would have been boosted significantly when Animal Crossing: Wild World launched in December in Japan, North America and Australia. It managed to sell over a million units in Japan alone in its first fortnight on sale.
Yarnton also revealed that a thousand new hot spots are to be equipped in the UK for DS use in the coming months. The event that he was speaking at was held to promote key forthcoming Nintendo DS titles including Electroplankton and the European version of the hugely successful Brain Training titles. This is strong indication that the PAL territories will finally be getting a chance to see for themselves some of the more unique reasons to own a DS and why the Japanese have been going crazy over them.
