Mario Kart Aussie showdown

DS Feature | Think you're good at Mario Kart? Come and prove it.
PALGN is pleased to announce that we've teamed up with Vooks.net to work on an event that hasn't been done before in Australia. We're having a cross site, Mario Kart DS tournament and we're enlisting the help of our readers to help us win!

We're looking for twenty of our readers to take on twenty Vooks.net forum members for supreme glory and praise from our staff and readers. PALGN will be choosing one of our members and they will win a copy of Sonic Gems Collection and Spartan: Total Warrior on the Gamecube as well as a copy of Metal Slug on the Gameboy Advance.

Everyone is eligible to enter (although only non staff members may win the prize) and we'll be choosing twenty random people who reply to this article to represent us. (Times and dates for all of the showdowns will be revealed closer to race day), but there will be a few days to race each event, most events will take place between 7pm and 9pm.

We'll unveil the full details of the competition shortly, but first we're after our twenty members who think they're good at Mario Kart. So what are you waiting for? Reply in this article.

LIES! If you're not a winner you're a loser, losing for chumps. You have to win, if you don't you can kiss your life goodbye because it'll be no good to you anymore.

What's the big problem abotu snaking? I see it as a skill. To do it well you need the right kart/character, which are normally slow at top speed so snaking becomes a nessecity for them to compete. If you screw up while snaking you loss ground big time so it's a risk.

If all else fails just sending an item can put the timing of snakers and make them lose major ground. It's always nice to launch a green shell at a snaker who ends up smashing into a corner or something.

Mm. It's most definitely a built-in game mechanic, it's not like snaking in F-Zero GX which was a physics engine exploit.
Of course banning snaking in a tournament is fine, you're free to set your own rules, but be aware that banning snaking is equivalent to setting up a special tournament with special rules, it's not an attempt to have a "proper game of Mario Kart". The game is supposed to be played with snaking included; it's a feature.

(For the record, I'm not a perfect snaker, I screw up sometimes, but I'm trying to get better because it's a skill that will improve my time.)

I don't believe this is true. I doubt the makers of the game would intend for people to spend the whole game zigzagging, if you look at the staff ghosts there is no snaking involved, even when they use the right kart for it. I'm not certain, but I don't think using a kart with a faster top speed will beat a snaker, such karts usually have other disadvantages. The karts with high accelleration are meant to be slow on straights, that's how it's meant to balance out, but snaking nullifies that disadvantage.

It is a matter of opinion though. Snaking takes the fun out of the game for me both when I do it and when other people do it, and I don't play games that aren't fun.

Can I enter or has it been decided? As you may know I've been in NZ, so I couldn't let you know earlier.

How can you not play time trial? Time trial is so fun and its a better indication of driving skills. The turns, the mushrooms, everything must be perfect. Everyone should try the Rainbow road ghost. Its insanely hard. Mustve taken me like an hour to beat it.
I think that the developers definitely didnt intend it to be played like that. Wouldnt you think the staff ghosts would be snaking if they did? I know how to snake pretty well also, but it feels so unnatural. I only snake against the snakers on wifi.

i dont there has been a decision yet on who is playing, and there is a lot of open spots.

im good pick me, iv got enough stars icon_smile.gif

Count me in, just got the Wifi adaptor and have been playing a bit against some guys from here.

As for snaking, it just completely takes the fun out of the game. It's almost like AWPing campers in CS, except there is really no way to beat them except for doing what they do too. It's good that the developers made it harder snake in this than they did in any of the other MK games, but still its a bit of a downer.

Snaking = Thumbs down.

Any idea when this tournament is gunna be happening?

There's 4 pages of people volunteering here (barring snaking talk icon_smile.gif and that's not enough? how big is the comp anyway?

i thought it was 20 vs 20 without bothering to look

Damn. I can't get my DS to connect with my router. It's on the list as compatable too (D-Link 624+). Grrrr... my PSP works fine. The only reason I wanted Mario Kart was so I could play it online. The DS is seriously not in my good books ATM.

^ that blows, I've seen other people have had problems, then the next day they have it working....

I tried snaking once, I fidn it annoying and stupid, it takes away from the game and hurts my fingers.

i used to think snaking sucked. now that ive played a lot since then, ive realised how skillful it can be. i do believe, however, that it abuses the advantages of high handling and low drifting karts. its the fastest way to go.

it will be hard to ban snaking in this tourney but its possible to make it harder to do by ruling out certain tracks like figure 8 circuit perhaps? should make it better anyway.

p.s. any announcements? ive been practicing for this event!

I hope you have, and I hope your snaking skills are up to scratch.......and about snaking not apart of the game........the staff ghost in Mariokart: double dash does it.

saying you cant snake in mkds is like saying.......you cant use the vehicles or snipers in halo2, if its in the game....its in the game. icon_eek.gif

thats definately true. i have no concerns really, just hurry up and organise it, its almost end of holidays and i work and study, so i dont get much free time.

Oh please, that's just wrong. the things you mention are, for instance, in the manual. They're obviously put in there intentionally. Snaking is exploiting the game mechanics, none of the staff ghosts in MKDS do it that I've seen, it's not in the manual, etc. It's part of the game now because damn everyone seems to do it -_- I've given up playing online because it's no fun any more, snaking just feels stupid when I'm doing it, so bleh.

It's more like if warthog jumping was the best way to kill people in halo icon_razz.gif

They snaked in Double Dash (newbcube) but not in MKDS as far as i know.

You're not meant to have sex games with the naked women on your boat, in God of War either.

You're not meant to trap your townsfolk by surrounding them with holes in Animal Crossing. Neither are you meant to Time Travel and hack items and sell them via Wifi.

You're not meant to camp in CS with the Awp.

You're not meant to bounce the ball out of grounds from kick off, retaining posession in NRL 2003.

I say, you have to snake just to be competitive. It's in the game and so are the above things I have mentioned, therefore you should be able to do it.

argh, it's a snake! snake, oooh snake...

ahem.

what's snaking?
dfsodoohsaodosh keep up with it Obs. when you powerslide you get a mini boost. snaking is when you powerslide left to right continuously up a straight to get boosts. we're arguing if we should ban it for this tourney because it gives advantage to high accelerating chars and karts where they shouldnt
