Australian Nintendo Wi-Fi information

DS News | Confirmed information, including the locations of Australian Wi-Fi hotspots.
Nintendo has officially announced today that Wi-Fi access for the Nintendo DS will commence on the 17th November. The first wireless games are, as expected, Tony Hawk's American Sk8land and Mario Kart DS.

Nintendo Australia will be installing Nintendo Wi-Fi connection hotspots in a number of public places that will offer complimentary access to Nintendo's online world. The hotspots will also feature downloadable Nintendo DS game demos and a special Nintendogs function that allows Nintendogs owners to experience 'Bark mode' without having someone else physically there to play with.

The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection hotspots will initially be available across 26 Australian retail locations, including selected Electronics Boutique, Myer and Dick Smith Powerhouse stores. The 26 hotspots will be rolled out from the 17th of November, and conclude by November 30th. A full list of participating stores will be available soon on www.nintendowifi.com.au.

When a user brings a Nintendo DS unit and a Wi-Fi-enabled game into a participating store, the user simply launches the game in Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection mode. No setup is required.

From home, if the user already has a Wi-Fi network, the Nintendo DS unit will connect directly to it with minimal setup procedures. Those who have a high-speed Internet connection such as cable or DSL, but no wireless network, can use the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector, which will plug into the USB port of a PC running Windows XP to create a wireless access point to connect a Nintendo DS to Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector will be sold exclusively through Nintendo Australia, at a price of $AU49.95. There will be no charge for postage and handling for deliveries in Australia. This can be ordered by calling Nintendo Australia on 03 9730 9822.

Finally, Nintendo DS owners who want to play games at Wi-Fi locations outside of dedicated Nintendo Wi-Fi connection hotspots or their home can use a laptop computer and the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector to access the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector enables the Nintendo DS to share an Internet connection established by a PC, providing a conduit to play games via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

We'll have more information on the wireless features of the DS shortly.

One word comes to mind after reading that : w00t icon_razz.gif

Although I think it sucks you have to order the wifi adaptor through Nintendo.

The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection hotspots will initially be available across 26 Australian retail locations
wait... so.... 26 locations, thoughout the whole of Australia....? That number seems a tad bit low for me icon_confused.gif

Great way to sell a product Nintendo. This is so typical of them. Release something new, but only make it available by ringing them. They don't even allow people to do the 21st century thing and order it online. Pathetic

*anti-Nintendo feeling of 2 years ago rising*

Also, choosing retail locations as hotspots?? What are they thinking? Who the hell would want to go to an EB to stand around playing DS.

I'm truly convinced Nintendo Australia is run by apes. And not the clever ones they send into space.

26 locations over an area twice the size of Europe...

7,500+ locations in the UK...

...

I'm agreeing with Spanca here.

$50...

hmmm...

GC compsite cable or WiFi stick?

cable, stick, cable, stick, cable....

arghh!!!

hard choice any help?!!

I would get both but I won't be able to get that lego set I need if I do...

26 locations? You changed Nintendo... you use to be cool.

Lucky I'm upgrading my internet connection soon. It may be a month until I have all the gear (game, dongle, ADSL), but mid december I'll be ready to vs all you Team SMK foos.

Might as well get a second hand XB and Live for the new connection too...

Do you guys realise that even in the USA you can only get the WiFi USB stick by calling Nintendo or ordering it from their website?

Spanca, I guess all of Nintendo is run by apes then? Shiggy is an ape!

Anyway, I can't wait... I'm gonna buy a wifi router this week because there's no point paying $50 just to get the DS online when I can pay $100 and use it for everything, including XBOX360.

Nintendo changed about 5 years ago.

You're letting Team.64 down, David. icon_sad.gif

The hotspots are very disappointing though. Sure, I could get over the fact Nintendo will only sell the dongle through them, but only 26 hotspots? That would suck for gamers not willing to invest in buying their own WiFi connection.

I foresee this hurting Nintendo of Australia in the end though. It's good to see Nintendo are opening up a Nintendowifi Australian website, without that they would be ruined.

Oh come on... the service is free (unlike XBOX Live) and you're still complaining? Stuff the freeloaders. They can pay if they want to play.

26 icon_eek.gif NoAUS had been getting better lately, but 26 locations!!! I think my family is getting a wireless network in the next month, so I'll be allright at least eventually.

So you can't play at somewhere like Maccas unless you have a laptop and a Nintendo WiFi USB? There goes my plan to sit at Maccas with a 50 cent cone all day.

I guess america having to order the dongle via phone wouldn't be much of an issue as america is a good 3-5 years n front of us tech wise so all 56ker's should have upgraded by now and have routers and such.

You know im actually not blaming nintendo or what not for this wi-fi thing not accepting 56k as i fully admit it's so old skool-in a bad way.

Still.......i seriously wanted to 'veeee' my way past all you smk's zealots and show you a thing or two....

so, do you need one of these adapters if you already have wireless in your home?

if not, then McDonalds should still be a valid area to play from, or indeed anywhere with a wifi hotspot. these 26 places are probably just the places that are "Authorised Nintendo Hotspots" that only allow access to DSs, as opposed to the other places that allow any wifi product to connect.

Nope. If you have wifi at home already you're good to go.

How far would the wi-fi connections go? There's a bunch of seats for some fast food joints outside (a metre or 2 away) EB in Rundle Mall - would that be close enough to leech off their wifi? (thats assuming we even get one there)

Other than that I gotta wait for Broadband. Poor me.
That depends on their strength. My router at home's strong enough to cover the entire house, so I'd suspect you could hook up by sitting on the seats outside.

All this wi-fi stuff is cool. I set up a wireless network a year or so ago at home simply because of the convenience. I didn't even know that the wireless network would also work as a wi-fi hotspot! Now two handhelds come out that use it and it feels like I planned for it. icon_smile.gif

I tried calling a few EBs today to get the low down on if any of the stores in Brisbane would be getting a hot spot. The story I got was "Sorry there aren't any wifi hotspots coming to Australia". Looks like the Brisbane stores aren't going to be setup on the 17th, or if they are they certainly don't know it yet.

At least Nintendo is trying. But, better luck next time.

From the article the 26 retail spots are the initial hotspots, hopefully there are plans in motion for expanding the number.

I'm not entirely sure just any hotspot would work with nintendo wifi, usually they require you to log in to get access to the net, something not possible on the DS. I assume nintendo tell people how to open up the required ports for free access or something if they become a DS hotspot.

I think I heard somewhere (can't remember) that if you want to do that, you'll need a laptop to log into the McDonalds hotspot (cause you have to pay for it), plug the USB thing into the laptop, and the DS connects through the laptop. Since it can't login itself.

You would think with the way the sales have been going with Nintendogs that they would be put a bit more effort into the marketing. The DS section is always the smallest in the store (well apart from the Cube) with little or no advertising around it. The advertising for the PSP is still going strong yet the DS seems (well at least based on the last charts) to be outselling. NoAus really seems to be dragging the chain. It's only a few days until MarioKart and Wifi is released but there's nothing on the http://nintendo.com.au/ site
