New details and first screens for Resident Evil on DS

DS News | Famitsu spills the beans.
The first images of Resident Evil on Nintendo's DS have finally arrived, and are currently adorning the latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu. The game - full title Resident Evil: Deadly Silence - is a remake of the very first Resident Evil title, released back in 1996. 1996! Christ on a bike, we're old.

It's not a totally faithful port, however. For one, Deadly Silence will be utilising fully 3D environments (the PlayStation original used pre-rendered backdrops of course), much like the superlative Resident Evil 4 on GameCube. This also means that we'll be blessed with the chance to enter a first-person mode for fights, if the screenshots in our Media Panel are anything to go by.

There's also the odd tweak to make sure the game makes good use of the touchscreen technology on the DS. From what we can see, the best of these platform-exclusive additions is still the ability to use the stylus to slash at zombies as though it were a knife (which we already reported on a while back), but we'll also be able to enter codes on the touchscreen by tapping away with our styluses.

On the top screen meanwhile, we'll be able to look damn fine whilst slashing the jugulars of the undead, thanks to a slew of updated character models and animatons. And pleasingly, there'll be new traps and far more intelligent zombies this time around, with your foes able to follow you into empty rooms now. Urk.

Finally, the preview in Famitsu also talks of some kind of wireless support, though exactly what this will entail we don't yet know. As soon as we do, rest assured you'll hear back from us.

Another remake of Resident Evil 1? One was enough. Why not create a whole new game?
Oh well. At least it's Resident Evil 4 style this time.

You know i actually bought res evil 1 for gc and thought damn this is gunna be f-i-n-e.

It looked so great and ....well........thats about it.That **** resident evil save system too is absolutely bollocks and the control scheme-that control scheme is scarier than any zombie. After wrestling the controls longer than i wrestled any undead i was frightemed-truly horrified.....that such a game became so popular with such ass-backward controls.

The resident evil series was a sinking ship and resident evil 4's control scheme-amony some other things(like the loss of pre rendered crap) saved the floundering series from the abyss.

This is one remake i will DEFINETELY enjoy. This is how res evil SHOULD have been.Heres to hoping more remakes of the res evil series with ver 2.0 control scheme.

The screens aren't working for me... icon_cry.gif

This sounds good though.

^^ Of course it's not showing up. Due to PALGN switching servers, not all media has been uploaded. Within 24 hours, the media should display properly.
Unless the server thing doesn't apply to new pictures. In that case, we're stuffed.

I didn't mind the REmake controls, not nearly as good as RE4, but it's a different kind of game.

Screens should be showing for you now, Cap. icon_smile.gif Like Googol said, it was new server problems. icon_wink.gif

Palgn is back in business!

Looking good. That bit about wireless support is pretty intriguing; I can't see co-op happening... maybe downloads? Co-op would be cool though.

Capcom will probably port the Nintendo 64 version of Resident Evil 2 over to the Nintendo DS next.
