New Mario and Luigi 2 details emerge

DS News | Critically-acclaimed RPG set for a DS sequel. Fresh info inside.
PALGN has a confession to make: we're a little late on this one. We'll blame it on E3 for now. As for those of you who are as tardy as PALGN, we're pleased to announce that Nintendo have recently(ish) released a bulge of new details on Mario & Luigi 2, the Nintendo DS sequel to the GBA's excellent Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

The original game was a subtle blend of turn-based and real-time role-playing that worked wonderfully well. That said, it only managed to sell about 6 copies in PAL regions, so we're slightly surprised to see that this follow-up will be making the trip over here. Pleasantly surprised, we should add. The game is being handled by the same chaps who worked on the original, the Nintendo second-party devco Alphadream, and it's looking very nice, as you can see from the fifteen screenshots we've received to date.

In a dramatic and highly original turn of events, the story sees Mario and Luigi setting out to rescue Princess Peach (!), only there's a catch: they have to travel back in time to recover the eternally missing damsel. The result? Our heroes spend much of the game coming face-to-face with baby versions of themselves, the Princess and Bowser. Cue the chance for players to control younger versions of Mario and Luigi (with X and Y), as well as the adult versions (with A and B, as in the original). Jolly good.

The DS' unique capabilities are being fully deployed, with enemies now often spread across both screens. When not in battle, the top screen displays a handy map, something we could have done with in the original. As for the battle system, things have remained largely unchanged from the original, with the same counter and dodging options available.

Alas, the only thing we're missing is a solid release date, with Nintendo refusing to be more specific than 'Q4 2005' for all territories. But so long as that doesn't slip, PALGN may just have found the first entry for it's Christmas list this year.

Great article/coverage, but one big error is in your article that is REALLY upsetting me.

Mario and Luigi is not underselling, and did not sell just 6 copies. For a quick refresher course, it sold 900,000 copies in the US alone and 500,000 in Japan.

That's 1.4 million copies sold, by just 2 regions, I wouldn't call that underselling.

Please correct this, as it leaves a bad taste on the editor's credibility, the site's credibility, and the game's reputation.

Ah, sorry about that. The article was meant to suggest it sold poorly in PAL regions, which it did sadly. I've corrected it. icon_wink.gif

Try reading the article before you insult the writer; he said 6 in the UK. icon_razz.gif

And I was one of them. icon_lol.gif

I don't quite know what to make of the news though... Yay? Boo? Help me out!

GTPod, I believe that the article originally said that the game was sselling poorly everywhere - Chris-Leigh even acknowledged this and stated that he altered the article's contents.
So LanceStern was right in pointing that out (even though he did so quite bluntly).

So it's all good now.

And, yes, I was also one of those 6 people who purchased this game.

Cool info on the DS installment, and I'm looking forward to this game!

You know, I never really enjoyed Mario and Luigi. I forced myself to play through the whole thing, but it got so repetitive just waiting to time button presses.

Anyone else not like it?

Also, if I didn't like it, should I bother with Paper Mario: TYD?

They're two completely different games. If you liked Paper Mario 1, you'll love TYD. If you didn't, you'll hate it as much as you hated the original, they're not too different gameplay-wise, just better graphics, more badges, new story etc.

I haven't actually played Paper Mario 1. I meant how does PM:TYD compare to Mario & Luigi?

The PM games and M&L games are very different in gameplay.

See, PM gives you that almost 2D but almost 3D experience where you use limited items to take out your enemies.
It is much easier than M&L if you ask me, as the timing thing is really simplified - you can never totally dodge an attack, like you can in M&L if you're quick enough.

M&L is all about reflexes.
PM is a lot more fun in my opinion.
PM2 is a great game if you like the Mario series - plenty of references to the series, the whole battles taking place on a stage thing with an audience (pretty cool), and the Bowser levels (like a weird version of SMB).

All in all, PM & M&L are quite different, but give one of the PM games a go, as I think they are a bit more approachable than M&L - even though I really liked M&L too.

End!

Well, you sort of can... Superguard (B) prevents you from taking any damage at all at the cost of being a more difficult Action Command. icon_kero.gif
(Paper Mario 2 only).

I won't deny that the Paper Mario games are a lot easier, but I also found them more fun... the same level of humour seemed to be missing in Mario & Luigi. Also, I just don't like the style of Mario & Luigi as much.

You're right about the dodgeing Hyperworm.
I was more saying that it's not like M&L, where you jump over attacks to dodge them, but yeah, whatever.
icon_biggrin.gif

And yeah, the PM games are a lot more fun to play that M&L, but they both have their merits (except I can't beat the last 2 bosses in M&L).
I still found M&L to be quite funny - maybe it's because I'm a big fan of Luigi, and all those strange things that they have him do in the game were quirky at the least.

Anyways.
Both good.

Anyone played SMRPG?
That game gets a lot of praise by Nintendo fans over in the US...

Anyone played SMRPG?

Ack, no but I really want to try it. I've been known in the past to go hunting for one on eBay along with a US SNES, but the price has always meant I chickened out.
Yeah, I can relate to that...
icon_lol.gif

I almost bought it once, but it was way too expensive.
I imagine if I ever do get it, it will sit on my shelf and never actually be played - more of a collector's piece than anything else.

Yep, I have it, mint in box. Worth over $200 now on ebay, maybe more.

I got my brother to get it in 1997 when he went to america. It cost him $25 brand new!

It's a bit more primitive an RPG - more then Chrono Trigger (which I also have Mint in Box!) for example. But it looks great for SNES, and has heaps of great details.

I haven't finished it - I didn't have an SNES that could play it until 2 years ago - It doesn't work with any converter or even a modified PAL SNES - you have to get a native US NTSC SNES (or a dramatically physically modified Super Famicom). Well I finally got the right screwdriver and modified my Super Famicom last year, so now I have a system that plays it.

All round to David's house people, and bring the glasscutter.

Mint, huh?
Wow, that's pretty cool!
icon_biggrin.gif

I only buy old games if they are mint in box with instructions and all paperwork - got me LoZ-LttP (SNES) real cheap (must have been a slow day on ebay... icon_wink.gif ) and PM (N64) for a good price too.

$200 though?
Damn that's a lot of money...
Yeah, slow days on ebay are the best. Unfortunatley there is no such thing as a slow day for Radiant Silvergun.

Or I'm trying to get a cheap Marvel vs Street Fighter (Jap Saturn) at the moment - After That I have the best home version of every single game with Ryu in it!
