E3 2005: New Super Mario Bros. announced

DS News | Bringing a whole NEW meaning to the term Super Mario.
Despite a particularly lacklustre name, it looks like New Super Mario Bros. will be a throwback to the roots of the series, with some old school platforming action.

Also, it looks like Mario's magic mushrooms have been laced with LSD, as they seem to be quite more effective than they used to be.

We will have more on this potential DS flagship title soon. Until then, check out the screenshots in the media panel.

I wouldn't count on it.
The gameplay video PALGN linked to in its Nintendo Pre-E3 Media Trailers article shows radically different gameplay; it may be in 2D, but it's going to be a fair bit different from all the 2D Mario titles so far.
For one you seem (the video is quite small) to be present with Luigi at all times, and you can bounce on his head to get extra jump height; you can wall kick; you can ground pound; you can collect large mushrooms which make you absolutely massive; you can do spins into the air by jumping on certain enemies or getting into large whirlwinds.
With the amount of elements and style ideas it seems to be taking from Mario 64 / Mario Sunshine, I wouldn't be surprised if there was no sign of the classic Mushroom or Fire Flower etc. in the game at all. icon_kero.gif
Looks like it's going to be a brand new and fun experience, but don't trick yourself into believing it'll be entirely old-school. icon_smile.gif

There may be new elements derived from the 3D games, but it sure of hell still looks like it's pretty damn old school to me.

Looks completely new to me as well. The only old-school gameplay features I noticed was the fact that it was side-scrolling.

Looks pretty damn enjoyable though. Can't wait. The Nintendo DS really has an excellent line-up coming up.

I agree, and I'm definitely looking forward to some 2D Mario platforming action, I'm just making sure you're aware it's not a pure throwback to roots icon_smile.gif

I am SO excited about a new Super Mario Bros. game!!!

I've been waiting for this sort of side-scroller since Super Mario World on the SNES... that's a LONG wait, which is almost over...

Yeah, looks awesome. Was it playable at E3?

Yep, apparently so... IGN has playtests up. icon_smile.gif

Why is no one mentioning the wireless co-op? So far this game is one of my most anticipated. Just wish they could have gone with sprites instead of polygons. Just lose to much in the way of personality.

Yeah, the polygons will make it feel like the Super Mario Bros. level in SSBM I think, but with better controls.

I can't wait for this game though.

Would it not be absolutely awesome if the game was a smash hit, and it encouraged Nintendo to work on a few new Super Mario Bros. 2D platformers?
Perhaps each one in a different style?
This one in 3D, the next in cartoony all 2D, the do a cel-shaded one like Viewtiful Joe DS...

It could be a brand new Super Mario Bros. trilogy, built on innovation and awesome gameplay, and a bit of that retro feel.

Who knows...
But this New Super Mario Bros. is something that drew my attention right back to the DS (and I don't own one yet)...

Yes, that'd be great icon_lol.gif

Arma: This co-op you speak of... do we know if it supports Download Play or if mutiple cards are required?

lol the different style idea is good, but flawed. However I think I'd prefer both those other styles. They'd just add much more personality to the bland looking 3d models from Mario 64. I had hoped they were placeholders when it was first revealed. Apparently not.

Unsure at the moment Hyper. I hope download play is possible. But so far nothing has been confirmed.

Sorry, that was a bit ambiguous icon_lol.gif
Yes, I was serious, I thought it was a good idea, I'd love to see a stream of new 2D Mario games icon_smile.gif
