New Zelda game announced for the DS

DS News | Out this year, apparently.
Nintendo has revealed at it's GDC 2009 keynote that the company is hard at work on a new Zelda game for the Nintendo DS.

Tentatively dubbed The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Track, the game will see everyone’s favourite green-clad hero travel the land by train. Like Phantom Hourglass, the game features cel-shaded graphics and touch screen controls. Not much else is known at this stage, though the train will come equipped with a cannon that you can use to defeat enemies.

Surprisingly, Nintendo is also boasting that the game will be released by the end of the year. Looks like Nintendo fans know what to ask Santa for Christmas, then.

Yay!

Phantom Hourglass is by far my fav DS game, so looking forward to this.

Agreed, I found Phantom Hourglass to be one of the best looking and intuitively controlled games on the DS..

Here's hoping they dont suddenly turn around and pull the old we meant 'out everywhere ELSE before Christmas'.. Australia you wait til June 2010 or something like that..

Looks good but almost identical to Phantom Hourglass. I loved that game and all but I'm no longer letting Nintendo get away with rehashing their games 10 times each.

Oh and the whole train thing is laughable.

A train?

... what.

I hope there's no time limits, that put me off Phantom Hourglass. No more hourglasses please.

a train is an odd choice for a vehicle to battle from. i mean, i know that during WW2 trainlines were used to move artillary around, but wrt the boats in TPH, a train somewhat lacks the emergency i'd be expecting.

and it's hardly exploring if you're stuck to tracks already traversing the countryside.

still - do want.

Perhaps it's a haunted track that changes where it leads to... Or you need to build the tracks before you go anywhere, possibly with light comical relief by having to pull up the tracks behind you? ;)

If it's in the same vein as Wind Waker or Phantom Hourglass, it's gotta be good =)

I felt Phantom Hourglass was far too short/easy. Here's to hoping for a lengthier game.

But I'll probably get it anyway...

More Zelda is always good news! I just finished the Phantom Hourglass last night. The time limit thing was a bit annoying, in fact, it's why it took me so long to finish the game ... I have had it for ages but stopped playing after having to go into the temple for the final time. At least it was easier this time with all the right gear. The last boss was a little too easy though.

Now how about a Zelda game made specifically for the Wii???

Tains look really odd... as does seeing Link in the new outfit...

Other than that, I like the look of controlling the statues around, looks like the puzzles will be as good as ever.

Wow, the train thing is so random! I LOVE Phantom Hourglass so I am very pumped about this. Haven't had a DS game to get super excited about for a good while so I'm excited! It's amazing that the DS will not let up... it has to be one of the best consoles ever.

Agreed, it's the only 3D Zelda game I didn't finish as I really didn't like it much. I felt that the touch screen controls didn't translate well to the Zelda series, and found the game kind of boring. The game looks to be a true sequel to TPH, replacing the ship with a train, so I'm not holding out a lot of hope... Give us a new Wii game already! I really enjoyed Twilight Princess.

I loved PH, but please please please Nintendo don't have anything to do with the temple of the Ocean King ever again! I'm extremely sceptical of the whole train thing atm, but i will give them the benefit of the doubt atm. Really looking forward to this, but I'd like to know more about the story and there it fits in with the other games.

Geez, you wait so long fo a new zelda and they still use the same art style...disappointing.

The train however is great! Zelda serial always has a quirky element, the train is it. So to you people who ae sceptical of such quirks, you really mustnt have been playing zelda for long.

Or we've been put off by the piece of **** that was the boat battles? I got right up to the end of Zelda PH but sold my game out of disgust after having to endure one too many boat battles where the hadn't worked out the mechanics of the shots right.

It doesn't matter what angle you shoot something from. When it hits something it damn well ******* hits it Nintendo.

I'd also like to ruin everyone's day by pointing this out. The subtitle is "Spirit Tracks". Link rides a train in the game. Trains drive on tracks. GEDDIT?! Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha.
I thought that was the point? What other meaning is there?

I am skeptical about the train thing, but if this remains a solid Zelda title I will be picking it up.

Though seeing Link wearing something that's not his tunic is very odd.

woah, looks like the zelda series finally jumped the shark on us.

oh well.

Nope that happed quite a while ago...

As much as I wish the portable DS games would revert back to the GBA style of games, if Nintendo make this game taxingly difficult in the form of puzzles, I will have a little bit more of my lost faith in Nintendo restored. icon_smile.gif

Looks like more of the same, which is a good thing if you ask me, and the dungeon crawling and puzzles looks fun.

For those of you who didn't like PH, did you like Wind Waker on the GameCube? The two games were very similar to me, just PH was a little more polished.

What? They need to change art style in every game? I like the style and think it suits the game well, it's a very different feel to Twilight Princess but the game's also very different. It's like a 3D take on Link to the Past =)

* Not to mention the ending ruined everything. Isn't there a rule in storytelling that states that no story should end in a way that makes the story meaningless? "Oh, you were on that ghost ship for, like, ten minutes. We heard screaming. None of that stuff ever happened."
At the end of the story they do hint that all of the stuff did somehow happen as

you have the empty Phantom Hourglass with you and you can see Linebeck's ship.
Anyway, as far as the story for this next one goes and with the train, I think it's important to think about just when this game is set.
Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass spoilers wrote
Remember that PH was about them still searching for a land mass to re-establish Hyrule properly after the events of Wind Waker and by the end of PH they still hadn't found it. Perhaps this new entry in the series takes place in the period during the great flood that Ganon spoke of in WW or many years after PH Link and co were able to rebuild Hyrule. In that sense I don't think that it'd be a direct sequel to PH as it would take awhile to build the train tracks and make a new Hylian society. Or perhaps I'm just thinking about it too much. Yeah, that's probably it icon_razz.gif
