E3 2008: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars announced

DS News | A GTA exclusive for DS.
Not quite what was rumoured all those months ago, but no doubt all the better for it - during its E3 2008 press conference, Nintendo announced Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars, an exclusive GTA game for the Nintendo DS.

Other than the emphasis on the games's exclusive characters and settings, little else was revealed about what assumedly is a different kind of touch-screen driven breed of GTA.

We'd wager bets against Gittes himself that'll we'll be seeing more from Chinatown Wars in the coming hours/days, so stay tuned.

I'm very interested in this. Here's hoping that it's a new top down GTA.

This was the only thing that got me mildly interested me during the conference. Of course they then decided to not show any footage of it nor elaborate on what exactly we can expect so that interest was short-lived.

I wonder if Rockstar are even developing this? Why'd they have to be so damn vague...

The original GTA was top down, so I can't see how a top down GTA is "new".

^ the same way GTA:VC and GTA:SA were new, after GTA3 was 3D?

Man I still want a 3D GTA: London 1960 though. But I guess this is cool still.

Guess you wouldn't care for the Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance versions of the game then.

My how the kids have short memories these days.

I disagree, the Top down GTA's were some of my fave.

They are, Rockstar Leeds (the same people who made manhunt 2 and the PSP GTA's) in conjunction with rockstar north (all main GTA games) are making the games.

since no footage was shown no one knows if the game is played in a top down manner.

you wont be able to see the Chinese words and all those neon lit signs clearly on such a small screen. I'd rather it be on a home console. I wana see some screenies first.

apparently it will be set in liberty city and i don't think that is the GTA IV Liberty City either it's probably the GTA III one.

You would think having China town in the title the game would be set in china with a chinese character but that may not be the case.

people have pushed impressive things on the DS I doubt it would get a full 3D open world though.

Here's hoping it's not. And here's hoping it has online play, that'd be pretty awesome.
