E3 2008: Buffy coming to the DS

DS News | Portable slayage.
505 Games has announced via a press release that they are bringing Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the Nintendo DS, in the form of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Sacrifice.

The game will be exclusive to the Nintendo DS and is currently in development at Romanian Studio Beast. The game will apparently combine first and third-person gameplay with the bottom screen on the Nintendo DS used to see the action.

The storyline for the game has been written by Rob Des Hotel, who wrote a handful of episodes of the TV series. The game is also apparently set after the events of the television show but 505 Games still says characters such as Spike, Angel, The Master, the First Evil and Caleb will appear in the game, even though they may not have survived the final series.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for 505 Games and we’re working extremely closely with Fox to ensure this is the definitive Buffy the Vampire Slayer experience,” said Rowan Tafler, Global Brand Manager, 505 Games. “Buffy’s return to videogames is great for long-time fans of the franchise and we hope the huge market reach of the Nintendo DS will help to create new fans too.”

While the previous Buffy titles have been hit-and-miss (the exception being the Xbox title) I'm stoked to see renewed interest in the franchise. icon_biggrin.gif

Let's face it, apart from the season 8 comics and this announcement there hasn't been much Buffy love lately...

^ Chaos Bleeds was also pretty good. it (along with the original xbox game) are also considered canon on some lists. (CB especially, since Joss Whedon was involved directly.)

i don't think i've played any of the other Buffy games tbh - but looking at them, they just seem to be pretty generic platform/beat'em-ups.

This doesn't look much more impressive than GBC Buffy (only other portable Buffy I've played)... cheap n' nasty 3D graphics indeed.

"The ultimate experience"
That is what all game developers say. In the end, those games usually fail.

I am so glad to hear that my Blondie Bear (SPIKE) will be in the game. I hope they can get James to do the voice for the character. Accept no substitutes. For so long now I havbe been getting my JM fix listening to the Dresdern Files audio books he did.

Just bought the game from the UK. Love it! Cost me $63 AUD including postage. I am a huge Buffy fan so am pretty biased. Some screen shots are photograph images that have been digitised so it is like having the characters back to a degree. Some of the dialogue is a bit dodgy (surprised the original writers wrote it) and the storyline is out of sync with what happened to Spike (i.e. moved on to Angel). But then I have not gotten very far yet so they might explain it later. You need all your DS buttons working (e.g. some moves so far need the R button or you cannot progress). In short, if you are a fan you will love it as it is a connection to the original Buffy.
