Race Driver: GRID coming to DS

DS News | Including track editor.
Atari and Codemasters have just announced Race Driver: GRID for Nintendo DS. The portable version of the title will be launching at the same time as the console and PC versions.

Being developed by Firebrand Games, who put together Race Driver: Create and Race, the DS version of Race Driver: GRID will feature a similar focus to the other incarnations: the race. The developers are cutting down on exterior features such as the upgrading of cars in an attempt to refine the racing experience itself.

A variety of modes will be available, including a 'huge career mode' that will include championship and race events. Challenges will fit the instant action bill, incorporating Time Trials, Speed Tests and Chase events. Races will take place on real-life tracks and throughout real-life locations set on three different continents. An improved version of the track editor from Race Driver: Create and Race will also be included, allowing you to design your own courses on which to race. Players will be able to place and manipulate sixty different pre-designed pieces of track, or use the Free-Draw mode to 'create and race within minutes'. The option to individualise billboards and other trackside features will also be there.

Multiplayer allows for up to four players to compete simultaneously, and comprehensive online leader boards will chart your skill and progress alongside everyone else's. Custom tracks that you've created can be shared with other players directly or via the Race Driver: GRID servers.

Head to the game's website for further details, screenshots, demos and trailers.

Race Driver: GRID should be available in winter 2008.

Is that our Winter or North America's winter?

There is quite a big difference.

Ive never understood why they bother - well I know why they bother, to make more $$ as the DS has a big install base.

But personally racing games have a lot to do with physics and graphics, which the DS cant replicate.

Obviously things like Mario Kart work well on DS, but NFS and Toca etc?

We received the press release directly, so it'd be our (Aussie) winter I imagine.

They didn't specify that online multiplayer would be available, but they did state that the game will have online capabilities - we'll see, I guess.
