While Nintendogs was the DS equivalent to a virtual pet, Real Adventures Pet Vet takes on a different approach by allowing gamers to take on the role of a professional veterinarian. From guinea pigs with blood noses to Dalmatians that just can't stop peeing all over the place, you'll find that Real Adventures Pet Vet borrows heavily from the real-life exploits of veterinarians. Too add to the authenticity, Real Adventures Pet Vet has actually been written by real-world Vets, so there is plenty of educational value to be had.
The game starts off with the player being introduced as the new Vet in town and before you know it, you'll have a worried pet owner asking you to diagnose the problem with the family pet. As the vet, players will be able to ask the owner a variety of questions, if you correctly answer those initial questions, more question options will open up allowing you to perform a more thorough diagnosis of the animal's condition.
Once you have a rough idea about what is troubling the animal, you will be able to use all of the veterinary tools at your disposal. Not exactly sure which tool to use? No worries, you can seek help from your veterinary technician who will point you in the right direction.
With a correct tool in hand, the gameplay quickly changes from an investigative theme to a set of fast-paced mini-games where the objective is to poke, prod and medicate the animal in the correct way to give them sufficient treatment for their injuries. X-rays, wrapping bandages, surgery; you'll find that pretty much every veterinary treatment you can think of is represented in here. These diagnosis and treatment aspects of the gameplay really add authenticity to the part, and the developer has done a commendable job at incorporating the stylus during these parts of the game.
Once players have completed the diagnosis and treatment mini-games, the veterinary technician then asks the player to choose the correct ailment for the animal and assigns you with a score.
Once you have successfully treated the animal, you can then put it into the recovery room and periodically check on its progress. At this stage, the game starts to feel more like Nintendogs as you wash, play and feed your patients to help speed up their recovery.
The game's sound is nothing spectacular, but it does offer a realistic recreation of animal sounds allowing the young gamer to become more engaged with the title.
As unimpressive as the game's sound can be, the graphics of Real Adventures Pet Vet more than make up for the lack of quality sounds. Every animal is lovingly recreated in 3D, allowing them to realistically resemble their real-life counterparts.
While it may not set the gaming world on fire, Real Adventures Pet Vet provides young gamers with hours of solid gameplay and educational elements that would impress even the most anti-gaming parent out there.
