An absolutely incredible game, one that should have given the franchise enough steam for sequels, but that didn’t exactly happen. Instead we got the Zelda-like Star Fox Adventures for the Gamecube which was a major departure, this was followed by the bittersweet Star Fox: Assault and finally the absolutely horrendous Star Fox: Command on the Nintendo DS (let’s all pretend it never happened). While there is no new Star Fox game, Nintendo did decided to remake the great Star Fox 64 for the Nintendo 3DS, and we were able to get our hands dirty with a playable build at E3.
The game is essentially Star Fox 64 on a new platform, and the features of the 3DS add something a little different to it. We were able to play two levels and what really pleased us was the fact that the graphics are largely redone with new textures, explosions and effects while still retaining the style and look of the original. The visual style has enough nostalgic flair to please fans of the original while enough strong presentation to capture the attention of the modern gamer. And yes, the 3D effects look good in this game and really seem to enhance the overall experience visually.
In terms of gameplay, the game benefits from the motion control of the 3DS, and it works quite well. For one thing it is quite responsive, sensitive and subtle as it does not require great tilts to maneuver the Airwing. Luckily, these motion controls are optional as you can choose to play using traditional controls. What we noticed with the motion controls was that it we often lost the 3D effect while moving the console around. While motion controls are workable and interesting, we personally enjoyed the traditional controls a lot more as they felt more right. Musically the tracks sounded familiar and apparently all the original actors came back to re-record the dialogue for this remake. From what we could gather, the dialogue is identical to the original Star Fox 64
We quite enjoyed Star Fox 64 3D. It will certainly be a great experience for fans of the original while still offering plenty for newcomers. Star Fox 64 was one of those games that stood the test of time really well, and this remake will feel as relevant when it comes out as it did all those years ago. It may not be the true Star Fox 2 we wanted but this is still pretty darn good enough.
