The game is set to feature heroes and villains from the Resident Evil franchise and so far Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield, Jack Krauser and Hunk are confirmed. Each character has a different set of weapons but primarily handle the same way. The Mercenaries 3D will feature locations and enemies from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. The build we played featured a location from Resident Evil 4 populated with those crazy mask wearing Spanish dudes, and our character of choice was Claire Redfield.
The game was comfortable enough to play on the 3DS, the controls were put to good use and the shoulder buttons helped a lot, it certainly was a lot like playing the PlayStation or Xbox 360 versions of Resident Evil. The game definitely has the feel of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, so anyone who has played those games will be able to jump right in. Like those games, Mercenaries uses an over-the-shoulder shooting perspective and feels like an action game. The most welcome change in Mercenaries is the use of the 3DS’s touch pad to display the main inventory menu, allowing us to change weapons and use items without having to pause the action and breaking the pace.
The demo was straightforward enough, we blasted through several enemies with guns, snipers and grenades and it was as fun as any of the Mercenaries mode. Like Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, the game features some close range melee strikes that allow you to push enemies off, strike them and stomp them while they are on the ground. It’s not all shoot and kill, as we had to keep an eye on the timer and destroy statues to extend. We lasted a good 2-3 minutes before our session ended.
Graphically, the game looks really nice, and the visuals resemble the style that was used in Resident Evil 5. The 3D effects were difficult to notice in this one due to the insane amount of action but the game still looks and runs really well on the Nintendo 3DS. The textures, lighting and effects look almost like the console counterparts.
Obviously, Resident Evil : Revelations on the Nintendo 3DS is what fans are really looking forward to, seeing as how it is a whole new chapter in the Resident Evil saga, and unfortunately we didn’t get to try a playable build of that one. While we did have fun with the Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D build, but at the end of the day, turning what is normally an ‘extra’ into a standalone retail game doesn’t sound good on paper. The final game would need a host of extras and modes to justify the retail price of something that comes ‘free’ with a standard Resident Evil title.
