Iwata on 3DS display and piracy

3DS News | Eyes are safe, pirates are not.
Some might say Nintendo have the tightest lips in the industry, yet despite refusing to go into details of their newest portable system until later, Nintendo CEO Saturo Iwata let loose some new information courtesy of Forbes.

Having long been in battle with manufacturers and distributors of flash-based cartridges for portable devices, of which Nintendo believe are a serious problem in the Asian and European gaming markets, Iwata commented that the 3DS would be built with increased privacy prevention measures, but refused to go into specifics as to avoid giving 'hints' to the culprits.

Regarding the 3D functionality of the 3DS, Iwata went on to address some public concern over the 3D effect and any potentially detrimental impact on eyesight, particularly that of children’s. He stated that the system’s 3D effects would be completely optional, with gamers able to play titles with or without the 3D display.

Drawing the line on any more information, we’ll all unfortunately have to wait patiently until E3 2010 to hear more.

Hmm, so his solution to the potential eye problems is to not play the 3D system in 3D. Ok.

Thank god theres the option though, I don't like 3D anyway. I have no physical/mental issues with it when I use it, I just think its hugely over-rated. This is great news and now I'm even more interested in the 3DS, if games were only playable in 3D I was going to give it a miss unless there was some ultra awesome game I needed to have :/ Still can't wait to hear about it though, I love it when a gaming company releases technology <3

That is pretty slack though, I can just imagine how many people will be upset getting one of these for their birthday or something and not being able to play it properly. icon_sad.gif

Welcome to the standard response. Unless you have some technical engineering marvel for making 3D work with every human's eyes.

...has 3D ever been tested on animals?

Doesn't work on birds that's for sure. Human eyes perceive smooth movement at 24 Hz, the current (rubbish) TV implementation of 3D requires at least 120 Hz which is five times higher than that threshold. Pigeons have eyesight that's at least four times better than ours (which is why the bastards leave it till the last minute to get out of the way of cars). So in order to test it on them you need a refresh rate upwards of 480 Hz. Factoring in a high enough resolution image at the correct DPI for the pigeons to see them makes the bandwidth required slightly boggling.

Is the 3DS meant to be a successor to the DS or is it only another revamped model with the same internals more or less?

give it 3 months and it'd be ha><><ored by chinese ninjas.

Increased piracy prevention measures mean nothing. As THEMAN said..

If you are outsourcing to Chinese companies to make your tech affordable, there's no way in hell that your 'secure idea' will be preventable in any sense from pirates being able to duplicate and crack it, short of being able to exclusively create some new and secure 'anti piracy' technology yourself. If that were the case, the consumer would be paying through the absolute roof to cover a single company's hush hush, top secret dev costs.

A fictional metaphor for the notion is like paying big bucks to Stark Enterprises for an Iron Man suit, seeing as no one outside Stark and his company has the technology to create an identical product..

On countering piracy, any company out there wish they could confidently say at a press conference that they have a watertight solution to people pirating their hardware, but keep dreaming along with everyone else Iwata..

A successor thankfully, which poses the question.. what moniker will Nintendo attach to the end of 3DS games?

MarioKart 3D? MarioKart 3DS?

MarioKart 3DS doesnt have the same charm to me as MarioKart DS; that, in addition to be utterly confusing..
