Quake on the GBA?

GBA News | Thanks to the new DRG 3D engine by Bobbee Tec, Quake and Quake II engine based are now possible on the Game Boy Advance.
Bobbee Tec, llc. announced today that the latest version of their DRG 3D Engine for Gameboy Advance is now available for licensing to third-party developers and publishers.

Bobbee Tec's DRG 3D Engine is the only technology available that can take PC-based games designed for the Quake or Quake 2 engines and actually run them on the GameBoy Advance! Yes, you read that correctly!

Development and testing of GBA versions of PC-based games is done almost entirely on PC and converted for GBA with a custom toolset; Compatibility with the wide variety of existing editors and utilities that designers are already familiar with results in ultra-rapid content creation and seamless (and painless!) conversion from PC to GBA - and also allows programmers and artists to focus on detail and polish, rather than core development issues.

The DRG 3D Engine features unsurpassed technical specs and is the only engine to support lightmapping, true 3D models, real 3D physics, and all the bells and whistles gamers expect to see on the PC and high-end consoles, but now are fully operational for the first time on GBA! For the specs gurus, complete technical details are available at http://www.bobbeetec.com/drg_tech.htm.

Videos of the engine in action can be found here.

Now that I think about things, as much as I love developers pushing GBA I wish they'd just make some good games. I don't care if it's 3D or 2D, some of the smaller developers seem to be focusing on flashy graphics and not gameplay.

I still reckon the Blue Roses Engine made by Raylight Studios is better, check out some screens below. They are also currently using the engine for Wing Commander Prophecy on GBA

These are the earlier shots, and unfortunatly I couldn't get an video of them, but it's very nice.

Damn, those pics look awesome for the GBA, and I thought the GBA had about the same hardware specs of the SNES icon_eek.gif

I've watched a video clip of Wing Commander in action and while it looks quite good, the movement seems a bit stiff. This might be down to the video quality or the limitations that a D-pad places on a 3D engine.

That's what the GBA is capable of? icon_eek.gif

Here's hoping developers actually use this for the greater good.

I can see something that resembles a MGS remake in those GBA pics. Is that true?

Only sort of.

Most of it is done in software not hardware meaning it can't run it very fast.

Ah, I see. I thought those MGS/RE bits looked a bit too good to be GBA.

And there was me hoping for a 2D Metal Gear (perhaps a remake of the first two metal gears) to coincide with the GCN one. A 3d remake would be much better, however I would like to have a lush 3d jungle (part of the first game...or second I forget) with a great draw distance in the future.

Maybe the GameCube game could use the GBA as a special camera which you can keep checking, or perhaps several cameras, that would be cool. Without the radar of course. Or maybe just the radar to make you feel more like Solid Snake, less HUD, more gadgets.
