E3 2005: Game Boy Micro Revealed

GBA News | Nintendo unveil their latest GBA device. And it's micro! First Image Revealed!
Fresh out of the Nintendo Pre-E3 conference Reggie has showcased the first ever glimpse of their upcoming console in their Game Boy line-up, the Game Boy Micro.

The GameBoy Micro plays every GBA game that is currently out, it's 2/3rds the weight of an iPod Mini, and just a "hair" bigger. And Reggie has claimed that the Game Boy Micro has the brightest screen out of the entire GBA range. Like the Xbox 360 it will feature changeable faceplates!

It will not contain any new technology. It is just an evolution of the GBA - like the SP was and design for the "image conscious comsumers".

Stay tuned for pictures soon.

But I've already got 2 GBAs, 3 GBA SPs, a Game Boy Player and a DS. icon_shiggyeek.gif

Stupid bloody Nintendo! I wish Revolution looked this good...

This better not cost too much, surely they can only re-release a re-model so many times at a high price.. ~_~

Personally I think the SP looks better. maybe you have too see the Micro up close..

Yeah, I like the SP more myself too...

Ah well, if it works, it works.

Could this be a preview of what the next Game Boy will be like? Nintendo are shrinking everything right now (Revolution and GBA). It's possible that this is just a test bed for the next, so it won't be a huge brick like the PSP.

i would have thought a good promo shot would have been that next to an original NES controller...

Yeah, it does look like the NES controller (ahh, brings back fond memories) only with a screen in the middle and more modern. I hope the screen is at least the same size. I probably won't get it, I already have a DS icon_eh.gif

Yeah. It's certainly not aimed at you (or me), but Nintendo have definitely found a target audience for this ... there are lots of people out there who simply don't like to be seen carrying a handheld gaming machine around, and anyway don't consider themselves into gaming enough to get round to buying one.
This is almost like a "toy"/"cool cheap mini gadget" version of a GBA; reduced to basics and simple. Pick it up because it looks fun, isn't overbearing and doesn't look demanding or expensive, and it has an expansive GBA game library.
Something you can pull out of a pocket whenever you want it - you would hardly even notice it was there most of the time - and just have a quick game.

I'm sure if it's appropriately priced it'll find lots of buyers.

I wonder what the battery life would be like...

There's a rumour that the GBA micro will has an sd slot. MP3?

Although even if it didn't, this plus play-yan (the GBA media player)would be a cheaper and far smaller media/mp3 player then the PSP. Actually, I might get one for that - espescially if the screen is even better then the DS's (which they said it is!)

hey, originally I said meh! but now I think it'd be awesome! The Sp is still to large for an Mp3 player, but this is supposed to be half the sizo of the Sp!

2 things;

1. I thought it was going to have that wireless adaptor that you can buy for the SP built-in.
2. Why exactly do we need this? I mean it looks cool, but way too small to play without getting a cramp.

Yeah, true. I think it does have the wireless built in (ign says wireless gamecube connection)

Nintendo mentioned that it's to target a completely new range of gamers, I don't think this is intended for the hardcore gamers - well maybe not in theory.

I'm sure Nintendo will reveal further details on the console within the next month or two though, such as extra features in detail and so forth.

While it looks cool, I'm not convinced whether I'll buy it. I just got myself a DS and that plays GBA and DS games perfectly fine, and to tell you the truth the GBA SP is small enough for my taste.

But I can definitely see this idea taken off amongst previous non-handheld gamers. Very compact and I hope this is actually a glimpse of what we can expect future Game Boy consoles to be like - in terms of size. Because having a Game Boy that could play Game Cube graphics and have the same size as that GBMicro then that would be something spectacular.

This must have been the next gen Gameboy that I read was going to be shown at E3. I thought it would interfere with DS sales but really, its just a new model.

Yeah. Speaking about the expansion of Nintendo's handheld space from the GBASP and DS to include the GameBoy Micro, Nintendo said the advantage against Sony has gone up from 2:1 to 2.5:1. It's not looking at the Micro as a whole new interesting unit, it's essentially the same unit, just marketed at a different audience. You're not supposed to buy one if you already have a DS, GBA, or GBASP. icon_smile.gif

They'll have to retail it for cheap, right?

I mean, the DS is $200, and plays DS games and GBA games, etc.
Why would you dish out $150 for a system that does a whole lot less, with a smaller screen?

I'm thinking this will be the cheaper & smaller model to grab the casual gaming market - I've been looking to get another GBA (I have an SP) for FSA, and if this is cheap...
But I probably won't get another one, as I want a DS, and money is, unfortunatley, a finite thing...

If it's under $100 australian, yeah, it's worth it to me. (I'm in the exact same boat with FSA).

If it plays mp3s, $150.

But In confrence Nintendo said they were aiming their next Nintendo Portable for release late next year (timing is probally acurate due to the rumored 2007 release of the Revolution). There was a lot of talk about the DS not being a gameboy early on, Thats when everyone started saying that the release was to close to the next gameboy as most of the 'good' games for the DS are planned for later release (either one of the portables could easily wipe out the other, competition against themselves if your getting me).
You guys wouldnt believe me would you! icon_razz.gif
