Pathway to Glory Preview

GBA Preview | PALGN goes hands-on with Pathway To Glory. Killer App for the N-Gage or massive flop in the making? We deliver the verdict.
A few weeks ago Nokia released a downloadable demo of their upcoming war title Pathway to Glory via the N-Gage arena. It has taken a while but we have finally gotten ahold of it and are pleased to present out initial impressions of the title. Pathway to Glory is being touted as the saving grace of the N-Gage, This means that a lot is weighing on the success of Pathway to Glory, So, after going hands-on with it, is Pathway to Glory one of the best titles on the N-Gage or an overhyped mess?

The first thing players will realize about Pathway to Glory even though it is still months away, is finely tuned. Menus are slick and options are plentiful, the menu system shouldn’t change much from what it is now, as presently it is great and easy to navigate. The overall presentation of Pathway to Glory is really distinctive. It is easy to tell that Nokia have put a lot of work into honing this game.

To give gamers a taste of how Pathway to Glory will play through Bluetooth, Bluetooth support is included. This allows fellow N-Gagers to take each other on. Full N-Gage Arena support will be included when the game ships but is currently a locked feature. When starting the game players have the option of playing through single player or cooperatively with a friend.

The mission is introduced in a very professional way, similar to the way Medal of Honour sets up the storyline. A background story is given and the mission is delivered and then repeated through text. Players are then given a mission map and choose their team and then the game begins. The first mission sees players having to destroy a water tank to wipe out the water supply of the enemy. Loading is relatively fast and takes three to five seconds.

The game looks very distinctive and similar to the older Command and Conquer titles, the controls do take a bit of getting used to but are fairly basic. (there are just a lot of them) A nice touch to the game is that if it is left idle for too long then war images will pop up, as if to remind the player that they are in the middle of a game. One thing that we hope is rectified before the final release of Pathway to Glory is the frame-rate. When scrolling through the entire level, a noticeable free occurs and slows down proceedings.

Pathway to Glory is promising a lot, the final version will include fourteen unique missions and co-op play for four players, medals and promotions, twelve different multiplayer missions, 22 weapon types, 12 different vehicles and 11 different nationalities. It still has a few problems which should be ironed out for the final release, and if they are, then this is the N-Gage game that N-Gage owners have been looking for.

Pathway to Glory will be released in Quarter 4, 2004 for the N-Gage. PALGN will have more information on Pathway to Glory as soon as it becomes available.
Overall:
The more we hear about Pathway to Glory the more excited we become. Only a few months left now and people will begin dragging their N-Gage out again.
