Sonic Advance 3 Preview

GBA Preview | We preview the upcoming platformer from Sega.
Sonic the Hedgehog has now appeared on numerous consoles including the Sega Genesis, Sega Gamegear, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube and the Playstation 2. The last few Sonic titles released have been decent but not as rewarding or enjoyable as the 2D adventures of the 90’s so Sega is returning to its roots.

Sonic Advance 3 as the title suggests, is the third Sonic platformer to appear on the Gameboy Advance. Sonic has also appeared in a pinball title and a battle title which were both mediocre attempts at capitalizing on Sonic’s success.

Sonic Advance 3 is different to the previous titles because it introduces secondary characters. No longer will one of the five selectable characters be on their lonesome as having a partner is a necessity. A lot of the time the partner can be a hinderance however by jumping on the wrong objects.

The lack of evolution in the title’s is a great worry and aside from the ability to play with two characters Sonic Advance 3 does little to change this. Rather than feeling like a new title Sonic Advance 3 looks the same as the first title.

The worlds in Sonic Advance 3 are colourful and varied. Sonic and his friends will be venturing from circus levels, sunset levels, underwater levels, industrial levels and more. There is an extreme amount of variation between levels.

Sonic Advance 3's level design is similar to the first two titles. Gamers will play through maze like levels. Having a grasp on exactly where Sonic goes is half the problem and Sonic Advance 3 is no different. Sonic will be going left, right, up and down to find the level goal.

In order to complete the game successfully gamers will need to hit timed switches, complete the nine missing chao and finish every level. At times Sonic will be going so fast the screen can not keep up.

We’re hoping Sonic Advance 3 turns out to be a big change for Sonic but so far it looks to be a similar game but pitting Sonic in different levels. PALGN will have more on Sonic Advance 3 as it is announced.
Overall:
The novelty of seeing Sonic on the Gameboy Advance is well and truely over. We find it hard to get overly excited by a title that feels rehashed and rushed.

I don't know whether to get the 3rd one. I liked SA2, but if this version isn't much different, what's the point? icon_confused.gif

I wonder how well the teamwork system will work on the GBA... promising, but if "the partner can be a hinderance however by jumping on the wrong objects" turns out to be a fair statement, it'll be a shame.
Might get this if it gets good reviews, but I'm not too fussed. icon_kero.gif
